Retiring Catalans Dragons playmaker Luke Keary is reportedly set to snub a coaching role that he’d been linked with.
Keary left the NRL at the end of 2024, inking a two-year deal with Catalans Dragons but after a difficult first year, the Australian has hung up the boots.
He was one of 13 players to exit Catalans and recent reports from The Sydney Morning Herald have suggested that Keary would join former St Helens head coach Justin Holbrook as an assistant coach at Newcastle Knights.
The pair had worked together when Keary was at the Roosters, however, fresh reports have actually suggested that Keary will actually take up a role with his former club instead of joining Holbrook at Newcastle.
That’s according the The Daily Telegraph who have linked the former State of Origin star with a return to the club he called home for seven years.
Luke Keary to make NRL return
A report from the Telegraph explained: “Luke Keary won’t be joining the Newcastle Knights’ coaching staff under Justin Holbrook.
“He remains close to Roosters coach Trent Robinson and chairman Nick Politis and is talking to them about taking on a role at his old club.”
It’s unclear if that role would be coaching or in another off-field capacity but the 33-year-old’s ties with the club mean he’s already clear on the culture of the club.
Moreover, Catalans and the Roosters have a strong connection anyway with Robinson a former head coach at the Dragons.
Keary isn’t the only retiring Super League star to be returning to the NRL with a possible role lined up as Hull KR’s Jared Waerea-Hargreaves is expected to return to the Roosters and work as a developmental coach.
Of course, JWH still has matters to deal with on the field with Hull KR set to play the winners of Leeds Rhinos v St Helens in the Super League semi-finals next Saturday.
