Aston Villa have finally returned to winning ways as they registered a huge comeback triumph over Fulham in the Premier League.

The Villans went behind early on, as Raul Jimenez nodded on from a corner at the front post to beat Emi Martinez.

Just before half-time, Aston Villa hit back through Ollie Watkins, before quickfire goals from John McGinn and Emi Buendia gave them the lead in the second half.

In the end, Unai Emery and his side saw out the game, registering their first win of the Premier League campaign in front of their home fans.

The start of the season has come with plenty of criticism, but the club captain McGinn has come out in defence of one of his teammates.

Ollie Watkins impressed against Fulham, finally getting off the mark with a goal in the league after a slow start to the season.

His form has coincided with the struggles of his teammates, as Aston Villa have been searching for something to kickstart the season.

Now they have that, club captain John McGinn has come out in defence of Watkins, as he told BBC’s Match of the Day 2: “He [Watkins] has had a lot of criticism in recent weeks, but what he will get from us as team-mates and staff is love and support.

“What he has given us in recent seasons is nothing short of brilliant.

“He always has a spell in the season when it doesn’t quite click for him, but he runs a lot and he works hard and then when he gets the ball, you expect that he will score. Hopefully that shuts a few people up.”

With Watkins up and running, there will be some hope that he can return to the sort of form that he has shown in recent seasons.

It’ll be crucial for Aston Villa to get their own hopes off the ground, with only six games played so far this season.

There have been questions surrounding Watkins and his place at Aston Villa, following the end of last season.

The striker was dropped for the match against PSG in the Champions League last campaign, creating doubts over his future.

However, with that now firmly at Villa Park, it’s clear that he will need to recapture his previous form.

Unai Emery gave his thoughts on the star after the game when he said: “Hopefully he can keep going. It’s the consequence of how he played in 30 minutes on Thursday.

“The most important and first step forward is to play, focus, be demanding, and he was doing it on Thursday and today.

“The goals are hopefully [also] coming for the next match.”

Aston Villa will be switching between Europa League action and Premier League matches, with some favourable fixtures coming up.
