James McConnell was absent for Ajax over the weekend due to a new injury, but seven other Liverpool loanees featured including teammate Vitezslav Jaros.

McConnell didn’t play for the Dutch giants in their 2-1 home win over NAC Breda after manager John Heitinga said on Friday that he is “not fit enough to feature.”

The former Liverpool coach added that the loanee won’t be available against Marseille in the Champions League on Tuesday either.

Jaros however started his seventh consecutive league match for Ajax, making six saves – five of which were from shots taken inside the box – as they kept their third-place position in the Eredivisie.

Having made his first start for Roma in the Europa League, providing the cross for Gianluca Mancini’s winner against Nice, Kostas Tsimikas found himself back on the bench at the weekend.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s side faced Hellas Verona at home and took a first-half lead after just six minutes thanks to Artem Dovbyk.

The visitors were the better team for much of the remainder but Roma secured their victory through Matias Soule with 11 minutes to play, 20 minutes after Tsimikas’ introduction.

Back in England, playing for Birmingham, Lewis Koumas‘ afternoon was brought to a premature end as teammate Jack Robinson, who used to play for Liverpool, was sent off shortly before the break.

This elicited a change from manager Chris Davies, with Koumas the unfortunate player to make way for the team to adapt to 10 men. They ended up losing 3-0 away at Coventry.

Further down the pyramid in League Two, goalkeeper Harvey Davies played for Crawley and lost 2-1 to Barrow, while in the National League James Balagizi came off the bench in a 1-1 draw for table-toppers Forest Green against York.

Elsewhere Luca Stephenson played 90 minutes on the right for Dundee United as they lost 2-0 at home to Kilmarnock, while across the sea in Ireland left-back James Norris played 60 minutes for Shelbourne in a 2-1 win over Waterford.

There was another player with Liverpool connections involved in the League of Ireland match, Jordan Rossiter lining up in midfield for the opposition.

Finally, Harvey Elliott started his first Premier League match for Aston Villa, but he was withdrawn by Unai Emery at half-time as Villa turned a 1-1 draw at the break into a 3-1 win at full time.

For Villa’s £35 million obligation to buy to kick in, he must make 10 appearances for the club this season – this was his fourth.
