Following passage of Kentucky House Bill 8 in the 2024 General Assembly, Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance has received $250,000 of annual funding from the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The funding will go directly to accredited aftercare facilities in Kentucky that play a critical role in ensuring the well-being of horses beyond their racing careers. By investing in these programs, Kentucky is reinforcing the industry’s responsibility to Thoroughbreds at every stage of their lives.

“We are grateful to the Kentucky legislature, the Governor, and everyone involved in this process for recognizing the importance of aftercare and for providing this essential support,” said Walt Robertson, president, Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance. “This investment is a step that strengthens the foundation of aftercare in Kentucky, and we hope it serves as a model for other states to follow.”

Aftercare is an essential pillar of the Thoroughbred industry, ensuring safe transitions and second careers for horses once their time on the track is complete. It provides the resources and opportunities necessary for these athletes to thrive beyond racing, while giving back to the communities and individuals who care for them. This funding demonstrates Kentucky’s leadership and commitment to supporting the entire lifecycle of the horse, from breeding to the starting gate to retirement and beyond.

Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance will award these funds to accredited aftercare organizations and facilities across Kentucky, where they can have the greatest impact. By upholding rigorous accreditation standards and supporting the facilities that meet them, Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance helps build a strong, sustainable future for aftercare and reinforces the industry’s responsibility to Thoroughbreds beyond the racetrack.
