Jamie Meehan (Cofidis) and Gabrielle Fox (UPV) have claimed the main titles at the National Gravel Championships in Co Galway today. It was just the second time that a gravel championships has been run in Ireland.
For Meehan, the victory is his second national title of the year as he claimed the U23 road race gold when he finished 2nd in the combined U23-senior men’s race at the National Road Championships in Co Meath in June.
He has also enjoyed his strongest season by far in U23 races in Europe, often climbing with the very best in the big mountains and securing a pro contract with French World Tour team, Cofidis, for the next two years in the process.
Fox has also experienced her own breakthrough season after a fast-track development phase over the last 12 months saw her race in Australia last winter and then compete all over Europe once the road season started.
She offered evidence of her progress with a fantastic performance at Rás na mBan in recent weeks when she took 3rd and 4th on stages.
Fox topped the podium today from runner-up Ellen McDermott, the former national criterium champion, and Martina Kelly.
Meehan claimed the men’s title today ahead of runner-up Conn McDunphy (Team Skyline) and last year’s champion Stephen Clancy (Ravet), who had to be content with 3rd place today.
More to come.
