The new medical director of Nightingale House Hospice has said it is “a privilege” to have been appointed to the role.
Dr Adrian Bellwood brings a wealth of experience from his career in general practice, palliative care, teaching, and medical leadership, alongside a deep-rooted connection to the local community.
Since starting his medical training in 2007 at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, Dr Bellwood has dedicated his career to caring for patients within Wrexham and the surrounding areas.
He trained as a GP and later became a GP Partner at Chirk Surgery, where he discovered a passion for palliative care. He went on to complete the Palliative Care Diploma at Cardiff University and take on the roles of Cancer and Palliative Care Leads within the practice.
Dr Bellwood has developed specialist interests in ear, nose and throat (ENT) care, lifestyle medicine, and medical education. He became a GP trainer at Chirk Surgery and went on to teach at the University of Liverpool’s School of Medicine, where he lectures large groups of future doctors.
Reflecting on his new role, Dr Bellwood said: “Nightingale House has supported hundreds of my patients and their families over the years.
“I have long been looking for ways to prioritise and promote palliative care within general practice, and this role allows me to bring all those interests together.
“Becoming Medical Director is a privilege, and I am looking forward to working alongside such an inspiring team.”
A key focus of Dr Bellwood’s role will be education and awareness, ensuring that more people understand the support hospices can offer.
He plans to develop clear pathways to help GPs care for patients with complex palliative needs in the community, while also raising awareness of hospice services so that anyone who needs support can access it easily, whether through self referral or professional signposting.
“Hospice care is about being fully present with each person, empowering them to live as well as possible, even in the most difficult of times.” Said Dr Bellwood.
“Nightingale House is a place where expert knowledge and compassion come together in creative and innovative ways, and I am proud to commit myself to that mission.”
Lauren Emberton, Chief Executive of Nightingale House Hospice, said: “We are delighted to welcome Dr Bellwood as our new Medical Director.
“His expertise in palliative care, dedication to education, and strong links within the local healthcare community will be of great value to Nightingale House.
“We look forward to working alongside him to further strengthen our services and continue delivering the highest standards of care for our patients and their families”
