This winter, eligible pensioners could receive up to £300 as the government rolls out Winter Fuel Payments to nine million individuals across England and Wales.

The majority of pensioners will automatically receive this financial assistance to help heat their homes during the colder months. However, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has clarified that some people will need to manually claim these payments.

A form has been released by the government department for those who need to apply for the payment themselves. Read the biggest stories in Wales first by signing up to our daily newsletter here..

To qualify for the payments, you must have been born on or before 21 September 1959. The amount of Winter Fuel Payment you receive is determined by your circumstances during the qualifying week of 15 to 21 September.

Most individuals will receive the payment automatically – you only need to complete the form if certain conditions apply:, reports the Manchester Evening News.

From 13 October, you can also claim a Winter Fuel payment by phone.

Following a government U-turn announced on 11 June, nine million pensioners in England and Wales will receive the Winter Fuel Payment from the DWP this winter.

This change means that eligible pensioners – those with an income of £35,000 or less – will receive either £200 or £300 this winter.

If your income exceeds £35,000, HMRC will reclaim your Winter Fuel Payment.
