Oscar De La Hoya thinks it’s time for Canelo Alvarez to find a new trainer.

Alvarez is coming off of the third loss of his professional career, after Terence Crawford claimed a unanimous decision win in their superfight on September 13.

Having woken up for the first time in seven years without at least one belt in his possession, Canelo would have naturally been searching for where it went wrong.

De La Hoya, who once promoted the Mexican star, seems to think that he would benefit from some new faces inside his camp.

Specifically, a replacement for his long-term trainer, Eddy Reynoso.

Canelo teamed up with Reynoso at the age of just 15 back in 2015 when he turned his hand to the professional ranks, and they have been working together ever since.

Having guided Canelo to multiple world titles across four different weight classes, Reynoso has certainly played his part in the fighter’s success.

Although in terms of his future, De La Hoya thinks the best route for Canelo is to move on.

He told Fight Hub TV: “I can’t advise him on retiring or staying in boxing.

“That’s a very personal decision, but I can say hey, get a new trainer.

“You’ll do better.

“A new trainer will teach you different tricks.”

Reynoso has been on Canelo's side since the boxer was just 15 years old

Two losses in his last eight outings is not so bad, when you take Canelo’s impressive record into consideration.

But losing his undisputed super middleweight crown to ‘Bud’ has certainly caused a stir within the boxing fraternity.

De La Hoya continued: “He still has a chance to fight several more fights with the elites.

“But he needs a new trainer.”

De La Hoya himself has experience dealing with Alvarez, having been his promoter until their turbulent split in 2020.

Since he has had much to say about Alvarez, and his latest advice will come as a surprise to many.

It was recently revealed that Canelo needs to undergo surgery to fix an elbow injury sustained when he was in the ring with Crawford.

So, as it stands he will be out of action for the foreseeable in order to recover from the procedure.

Following that setback, he is expected to return to a much lighter version of training around 4-6 weeks later.

Which suggests we can anticipate his return to the ring at some point in 2026.

Especially as the 35-year-old still has two fights left on his deal with Saudi boxing promoter, Turki Alalshikh.
