Mercedes and George Russell have yet to confirm that they will continue working together beyond the 2025 Formula 1 season.
George Russell enters the Singapore Grand Prix sitting fourth in the drivers’ championship, with the title out of reach, but a comfortable lead over both Ferrari drivers.
Russell and his Mercedes teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli have been publicly assured by team principal Toto Wolff that they will be racing for the team in 2026.
However, the wait continues and one of the potential reasons why is the interest in Red Bull driver Max Verstappen looming in the background.

Verstappen has been a long-term target for Mercedes, but committed his future to Red Bull for 2026, coinciding with Christian Horner’s exit.
That doesn’t mean the Silver Arrows won’t make another move for the four-time world champion in the future.
This appears to be delaying a deal with Russell, who wants a long-term deal at Mercedes to protect himself against the potential arrival of Verstappen.
Journalist Reginaldo Leme has shared the latest he’s heard about negotiations between Russell and Mercedes and Wolff’s hope for the future when it comes to his driver line-up.

Speaking on his YouTube channel about the situation at Mercedes, Leme explained: “How can Mercedes sign Russell for more than a year, knowing that Verstappen will be the driver from 2027?
“And the two don’t get along? Or are they betting, I don’t know, on trying to bring them closer together, which is possible, or else this thing, let’s keep proposing just one year, and Russell should accept in the end, but waiting for another invitation is better there with the longer contract.
“But, it’s a very difficult situation because there are two sides to it, and if you think about it, Russell, he knows that now he’s the only driver there at Mercedes, they don’t even have Bottas anymore, he’s already signed with another team.

“There’s no one else they can think of, and, you see the effort he made, right [in Baku]? He was a hero.
“So, I think it’s another point in his favour for Mercedes to rethink everything, isn’t it? To the point of thinking, ah, let’s give up on Verstappen.
“He’s not going to give up. I think that’s a tacit agreement that can’t be reversed, but to think of every possible way to find a way to keep Russell there.”

Journalist Jorge Piero echoed Leme’s thoughts about Russell’s situation, and on X in the build-up to the Singapore Grand Prix, he said: “How many months have we been hearing the same old story about Russell’s contract renewal? He’s been asked about it and has once again given a vague answer…
“I understand that Mercedes is still offering him a 1+1 deal to open the door for Max in 2027. I don’t know how they will be able to reach an agreement in this tug of war.”

The trouble for Russell is that the driver market has been far too static for him to be in a strong negotiating position with Mercedes.
Russell has considered changing his management team to put himself in a stronger position beyond 2025, with Wolff currently in charge of his future.
That suggests that he knows he at least needs to keep his options open, even if he would want to stay at Mercedes for the foreseeable future.
What the 27-year-old will discover if he needs to find a new team is that he’s one of the most highly-rated drivers in the paddock, but as Carlos Sainz discovered last year, that doesn’t guarantee you a spot at a race-winning team.
