Justin Rose admitted it was a shame his Ryder Cup match ended in a heated row with Team USA players and caddies.

The Europe star was sensational alongside Tommy Fleetwood as they defeated American superstars Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler 3&2.

It helped the visitors build the biggest two-day lead in Ryder Cup history at Bethpage Black in New York (11-and-a-half, 4-and-a-half).

However, the match was overshadowed as an argument erupted between both teams on the 15th green.

DeChambeau’s caddie Gregory Bodine moved into Justin Rose‘s eyeline as the Brit lined up a putt on the 15th hole, and Rose told him to move out of the way.

The Europe star then nailed his putt and celebrated rather calmly before DeChambeau converted to extend the match.

His celebration was rather different, as he gave it the big ‘un and had words with Rose and Fleetwood.

The conversation continued on the walk to the 16th tee, with Scottie Scheffler‘s caddie Ted Scott also getting involved.

He cut an angry and aggressive figure with Europe vice-captain Francesco Molinari and Fleetwood intervened to calm things down.

On the walk to the 16th tee, DeChambeau could be seen in a heated exchange with Fleetwood’s caddie, Ian Finnis.

Rose also had some words with Scheffler, though, that all seemed much more relaxed.

The world No.1 was the only player in the group who had no interest in any of it.

And the match did not last much longer than that as Rose and Fleetwood got the job done on the 16th green.

There were handshakes between all players and caddies, although Rose had to track DeChambeau down.

What has been said about the incident?

DeChambeau and Scheffler declined media requests after the match, but Rose gave his version of events.

He said: “It was a shame it got to that point as it was a great match.

“I was waiting to putt and the boys were working on their read and their calculations. I waited a few seconds and then they came up again.

“I said ‘it was my putt’ but maybe I could have said it more politely. By no means was there any disrespect meant. I said if you want me to say ‘excuse me please’ then my bad.

“I hope it is put to bed. It should be put to bed. There was no intent whatsoever. I admire Scottie more than anyone else on tour. It was something that was taken in a way that wasn’t intended.

“I am just trying to control my environment in that moment.”

What else happened on day two?

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry overcame serious abuse from the crowd to take down Cameron Young and Justin Thomas.

It turned pretty nasty at points for McIlroy and Lowry, who had to be escorted around the golf course by police.

McIlroy’s wife Erica Stroll had to leave her husband’s match early due to comments from the crowd, while Lowry was targeted over his weight.

At one point, the Irishman told the crowd to ‘f*** off’ before then having to be restrained from reaching a fan as things turned ugly on day two.

But the duo managed to put all that aside to claim a massive point for the Europeans – on their way to a historic scoreline.
