Isle of Wight libraries are inviting residents to explore the delicious link between food and literature this summer as they take part in the Big Tasty Read.
The national initiative, curated by The Reading Agency and BBC Arts, celebrates the role of food in books and everyday life, and is part of the Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture programme.
Celebrating stories through food
The Big Tasty Read brings together culture, reading and cuisine, highlighting fiction, memoirs and cookbooks that explore how food shapes our lives.
Isle of Wight libraries are offering a wide range of events and themed collections to support the project, with something for readers and food-lovers of all ages.
Activities already underway in Cowes
At Cowes Library, visitors can support mental health in the hospitality industry by browsing or donating to Eat Street’s fundraising bookcase.
All proceeds go to the Burnt Chef Project, a charity working to tackle mental health stigma in kitchens and food service environments.
The library has also launched a themed collection called What’s Your Poison? — a hand-picked selection of crime and mystery novels with a culinary twist.
Pop-up library at The Garlic Farm
On Saturday 9th August, the library service will pop up at The Garlic Farm in Newchurch.
They will showcase a selection of cookery and food-themed books, along with digital food magazines available through the free BorrowBox app.
Visitors who show their Isle of Wight Library card will receive 10 per cent off all items in the farm shop that day.
Anyone without a card can sign up on the spot by bringing proof of identity.
Sandown Bake-off brings the summer to a close
Sandown Library will host the Big Tasty Bake-off on Wednesday 3rd September.
Bakers of all abilities are invited to prepare a sweet treat using a recipe from a library cookbook.
It’s free to take part. Entrants will have the chance to sample each other’s creations, vote for their favourite, and enjoy tea and conversation.
Entry forms and further details are available directly from Sandown Library.
Books and food: a winning combination
Louise Emery, development librarian for the Isle of Wight Council Library Service, said,
“The Big Tasty Read is a brilliant way to bring people together through two of life’s greatest pleasures — books and food.
“We’re excited to see our communities getting involved, sharing recipes, stories, and maybe even a few secret ingredients!”
