Altay Bayindir was in good spirits following Manchester United’s 2-0 victory over Sunderland – despite being dropped by Ruben Amorim. Bayindir, 27, had started United’s previous six Premier League games, three of which came after Senne Lammens arrived from Royal Antwerp in a transfer deal worth up to £21.6 million.
The goalkeeper failed to convince Amorim that he was a reliable No.1 and last weekend’s dismal 3-1 defeat away to Brentford proved to be the final straw. Ahead of Saturday’s clash with Sunderland, Lammens was named in the starting XI for the first time.
Not only did the 23-year-old keep a clean sheet, but he produced a performance vastly more assured than any of Bayindir’s this season. Lammens earned praise from supporters and Amorim post-match, so you’d forgive Bayindir for feeling blue.
But that doesn’t appear to be the case. On Instagram, the Turkey international reacted to United’s win by posting the scoreline, a red heart emoji and a strong arm emoji. Bayindir was also seen hugging Lammens on the pitch after the final whistle.
Amorim said ahead of kick-off that his decision to drop Bayindir was simply down to rotating his squad. “Everybody has to be ready to play,” the United manager stressed. “We need to win this game, every opponent is different, so we try to find the best characteristics to win every match.”

Reflecting on Lammens’ debut, Amorim told BBC Sport: “Senne did really well. We were a competitive and adult team today. We need to win these games with a clean sheet. Good for us.”
Mason Mount, who scored United’s first goal prior to Benjamin Sesko’s strike to make it 2-0, also praised his new team-mate. “He was solid, when we were under pressure, the option was Ben [Sesko] and we worked off that,” Mount explained.
“Buzzing for him, everyone was around him today, it can be tough making your first start we wat to be together and I felt that today so we keep moving forward.”
