Wellens, who has been at the helm of his hometown club for three seasons, is at the end of his contract at the club with no decision yet made on whether he is staying or going.
However, speaking tonight after his side’s 20-12 knockout at Hull KR, Wellens admitted that the club has a decision to make once the dust has settled on the season’s ending.
Wellens said: “It got to the point where I think all of us were pretty set on just getting to the end of the season and not making any announcements or decisions.
“Obviously there’s a lot of emotion surrounding tonight and losing a big game, but what I think it’s important to do is let the dust settle there.
“But quite naturally the club have got to make a decision on what they want for the future and those discussions will take place, I’m sure sooner rather than later.”
However, Wellens did not wish to be the focus of attention on a night in which Morgan Knowles, James Bell, Joe Batchelor, Moses Mbye and Jon Bennison said their farewells to their time in the red vee.
“I don’t want the emphasis to be on me today or my future.
“I’m comfortable with whatever happens with regards to my future, but we’ve got a number of players there – Bell, Bachelor, Mbye, Knowles and Bennison are leaving the club.
“They have given a lot to the team and it’s important that we let them celebrate a couple of days with their teammates, who are obviously all going to move on to pastures new at the end of the year.”
Whether he is here next year or not, Wellens highlighted not only the positives that next season’s head coach will have – but also the challenges they face and the improvements they must find.
Wellens said: “There’s no doubt that there’s an exceptional crop of young players coming through the club.
“Harry Robertson, George Whitby, George Delaney, Noah Stevens, Owen Dagnall, and young Leon Cowen who debuted the other week, and there’s many more like them.
“Whoever has the privilege to sit in this seat next year, whether it be me or somebody else has got a wonderful group of young players to work with.
“Also, there’s some work to do.
“There’s no getting away from that as well.
“The team needs to improve, the team needs to get better if we’re going to be challenging the likes of Wigan and Hull KR next year.”
