As our American readers begin to wake, here’s our first USA deal of the day, and it’s another item that’s likely useful in winter… the Kärcher OC 3 Plus Mobile Outdoor Cleaner.

A few of us in the CN team have these in our homes. For me, it’s perfect for taking with me when I take the mountain bike to the woods with the dogs; letting me clean everything off before we all get back in the car (and saving me a job when I get home!)

And this morning we’ve unearthed a host of deals on Cateye’s range.

There’s front and rear lights on offer, with everything from budget-friendly city lights, to high-powered nighttime adventurers.

As a guide to the brightness you need:

For front lights, if you want to see where you’re going at speeds of 18-25mph (essentially, most descents) on an unlit road, you’ll need around 1000 lumens.

Less than this, you’ll be okay at slower speeds (proportionate to the brightness, of course).

If you’re riding in the city, where streetlights handle a lot of the illumination, your focus will be on being visible to other road users, and for this, we’d recommend at least 250 lumens up front.

If riding off-road, we’d suggest 1000 lumens at slower speeds, and more if you’ll be descending anything technical at speed.

For rear lights, we’d recommend at least 150 lumens in a flashing pattern.

We’d also recommend doubling up with a backup front and rear light, just to keep you safe in the case of your main light switching itself off. This is especially pertinent at the rear, as you won’t realise it’s happened right away.

This backpack is completely waterproof, and with roll-top closure which not only doubles down on waterproofing, but also means the total capacity is adjustable. Roll it down tighter when carrying less, or stuff it to the max.

It does make it somewhat of a bucket, in that access is ‘top down’ only, meaning stuff you put at the bottom is hard to reach without emptying it (unlike zippered backpacks that peel away the front), but the benefit is cavernous storage, perfect for commuting and travelling alike.

The first find of the day… perhaps aptly so, given I sit here writing this with a cup of coffee to my right, is this find by Will.

Not in any way related to cycling, aside from the fact cyclists and coffee have an unusually tight bond, but this small two-cup pourover filter coffee machine from Melitta, is 40% off.

Will calls it his favourite coffee machine.

I’m unsure how many coffee machines Will has, so it could be a favourite among a study of one, but still, the man enjoys a cup of coffee and he’s a big fan of this.

In our brief Slack exchange about it, he also described it as “dead cute.”

Whether you are riding to work, meeting friends or stopping for a mid-ride coffee, making sure your bike is still there when you are finished is top priority. Nothing is foolproof, but having a really good lock is certainly going to help.

Not all locks are equal and while we could recommend a lock that will keep all but the most industrious thieves at bay, you probably don’t want to carry it on your local club ride.

For something lightweight, I use Hiplok Z LOK Combo. While I wouldn’t trust this for more than a few minutes, sometimes that’s all I need when nipping into a shop midride. It’s super light and portable too, so you can easily pop it in a jersey pocket or tuck it in a framebag.

I’ve tested a tonne of bike computers* and the Wahoo Roam is my pick of all of them. It’s not perfect, but the navigation is superb and the user interface is far more intuitive than the Garmin system. If you’re doing serious training then Garmin is probably a better shout, but if you’re just riding then I’d go with Wahoo, and the Roam V3 is 15% off in the USA.

While we’re on the subject of warm feet… The best winter cycling socks are on sale too!

I’ve tested more or less every pair of the best winter cycling socks on the market, and the best of the bunch are made of Alpaca wool. While merino wool has a great warmth to weight ratio, it is surpassed by Alpaca thanks to the hollow nature of the wool fibres.

What that means in practice is you can get a really warm sock without adding too much additional bulk, which can result in compression of the foot and reduction of circulation, which ultimately makes things worse.

I have two sets of Hollow crew socks and they are among my most treasured winter riding accessories, and they’ve come out with me on rides deep into sub-zero territory. What’s more, the wool is noticeably softer than merino, so no wool-itch. Just be careful with how you wash them; if you shrink ’em you’ll be very upset!

Here’s a deal that not only have I spent my own money on, but I’ve done it twice…

For £25 or so, or around $30 you can pick up a set of boot dryers, and your life will never be the same. No more slipping on slightly damp footwear the day after a soaking ride, no more wet shoe smell permeating your house. Just plug in and dry.

These are so good that I bought mine full price, and then immediately bought my mother a set too, and she loves them just as much as I do.

Speaking of Endura…

The demands of commuting in the rain are primarily 1) stay dry and 2) stay visible. I found Endura’s Humvee waterproof jacket at 20% off in the UK too, which ticks both boxes.

While I haven’t tested this jacket specifically, I have tested several others from Endura that use the same waterproof tech so I’m confident it’d hold up to the rigours of daily commuting if you’re staring down the barrel of a long winter of riding to work.

Nobody likes wet feet

While our guide to the best cycling overshoes is great for road riding, it’s harder to cope off road as walking can often shred overshoes to bits. I prefer to go for a decent set of waterproof socks instead, and just dry my shoes out when I get home (more on this shortly…).

If you’re of a gravelly persuasion even in the winter then Endura’s venerable Humvee waterproof socks are 20% off in the UK. While they aren’t the absolute best, they’re really good for the price and my pair get rolled out every winter and just keep on putting up with abuse.

If you’re of a nervous disposition like me then even leaving your bike leant up at a café while you sip an espresso and get a small slice of cake/chow down on a massive sandwich and a whole pot of tea can be a stressful undertaking.

Café locks – small, ultra-portable locks that secure your steed while it remains in sight – can be a real saviour for the café ride, or even for bikepackers who need to just dash into a shop for a resupply.

There are a couple of options on sale now in the UK. I use the Hiplok Z Lok Combo myself, but the Abus cable option is a little more flexible and versatile if you want to secure multiple bikes.
