Hull FC assistant coach Andy Last has told Tom Briscoe what he must do to stand the best chance of sticking around beyond the end of the Super League season.
Briscoe has been one of Hull’s most used players this season, making 19 appearances and scoring seven tries in all competitions, missing just three games including the last two, after being an unused sub last time out against Wigan Warriors.
However, the 35-year-old’s contract is up at the end of the season and as it stands, a new deal has not been agreed, ensuring his future is very much uncertain. Briscoe has made it clear he is keen to stay at the MKM Stadium, but Last has urged the winger to do all he can to earn himself the contract that will secure his future and take him into next season with the Black and Whites.

“He’s just got to play well,” Last said when asked about Briscoe’s future. “If you play well, then you give yourself a better chance of sticking around from a new contract point of view.
“Tom is someone who is certainly having the conversations with the club, and I’m sure, as and when, something will be worked out.”
On the last two weeks, which have seen Briscoe drop out of the reckoning, Last added: “Tom’s a little bit disappointed. Like all players, they want to play, but the form of Lewis (Martin) and Harvey (Barron) has been good this season.
“They haven’t had many bad games and Tom knows that has got a role to play within the squad. His best position is winger, but those young lads have made those positions their own, so the challenge for us as coaching staff is to select based on performance and that’s what we will be doing moving forward.
“Tom has played some games at centre and done a good role for us there when we needed him too. But Tom is a professional and he knows the train of thought and what’s required of him as a professional player. He will contribute every day in training and be the best he can possibly be, and when he gets his opportunity to play, I’m sure he will take it with both hands.”
