The year definitely isn’t over just yet but with Halloween on the horizon, Letterboxd is jumping the gun a bit and unleashing their Official Top 25 Horror Films of 2025 a bit early.
What lands a horror movie on this particular list, you might be wondering?
Letterboxd explains, “[These movies are] ranked by average Letterboxd member rating according to ‘horror’ genre tags. Curated by Letterboxd head of platform content Jack Moulton.”
The general eligibility rules include…
Feature-length narrative films included only.
Films must have their first national release in any country in 2025.
Films with only festival screenings in 2025 included until the end of the year.
There is a 1,000 minimum view threshold.
Letterboxd’s Top 25 Horror Films of 2025 features some obvious picks including Sinners (at #1), Weapons, Bring Her Back, 28 Years Later, Together, and Guillermo del Toro’s acclaimed upcoming Netflix movie Frankenstein, but the list also represents the wide breadth of tastes and home countries among Letterboxd’s millions of users.
Not-yet-released films including Curry Barker’s Obsession, Tina Romero’s Queens of the Dead, Bryan Fuller’s Dust Bunny, and Charlie Polinger’s The Plague made the list thanks to festival screenings, while the list includes many horror films you maybe haven’t heard of yet.
Films like It Ends, The Virgin of the Quarry Lake, I Am Frankelda, Vash Level 2, Obex, and Dead Lover should probably be on your genre radar for the near future.
