Kemi Bandenock is the Leader of the Conservative Party in the UK
Leader of the Conservative Party in the United Kingdon, Kemi Bandenock, has forcefully pointed out how the deadly Covid-19 global pandemic affected the UK economy, which she said was doing well under the the ruling Conservative Party.
The unprecedented pandemic, set global economies aback, leading to sharp inflation and rising cost of living across the world. This impact also led to several ruling governments, including the UK’s Conservative Party losing national elections by landslide margins.
And in almost every country where ruling parties lost, the pandemic, has been cited by analysts as having had negative impacts on the economy
In the UK, Leader of the Conservative Party has emphasised this position in a statement in Parliament, which compared the current high unemployment and ballooning expenditure under the governing Labour Party, to the well controlled economic management under the Conservatives prior to covid, until the pandemic ruined their efforts.

Below are excerpts of the statement the Conservative Leader made on the floor:
“Mr Speaker, the welfare system no longer works as it should. What was once a safety net has become a trap. A system designed to protect the most vulnerable is now encouraging dependency and dragging this country into deeper debts.Mr Speaker, the welfare system is a crucial safety net for the poor and the most vulnerable in our society.”
“In 2010 we inherited 8% unemployment and we brought it right down. The last Conservative government reform welfare introduced universal credit and our reforms ensured that unemployment was more than halved and was at a near record low.”
“What have we seen since they came in? Unemployment has risen every single month since they came into office. Mr speaker during our time, indeed 800 jobs were created for everyday we were in office. And at the same time, until the covid pandemic we kept spending under control, cutting deficit every year. But covid changed everything. It did,” she said.
Kemi further bemoaned how excessive spending had dire impact on the economy and called for more praoctive approach to tackling crisis.
“It is delightful to hear them laughing. I remember sitting on that side of the House and they were demanding that we spend more and more, and more money. Thanks it was Conservatives who were there during Covid. Labour would have bnakrupted the country. Mr Speaker, we faced a new reality.”
“Under this government every single working day, 3000 people move unto incapacity benefits. That is a 50% increase from when we left office. They have only been in power for one year. Imagine what it is going to be like after the next 4 years. This is not normal, not sustainable and not acceptable. Spending is spiralling under Labour Mr Speaker. 28m people not working and health benefits ballooning, the statement read.
The narration of the significant negative impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the British economy, compares to similar account in Ghana, which the immediate past Akufo-Addo government, has also pointed out how it was doing so well under every economic indicator until the Covid-19 pandemic hit the economy hard.
