Leeds Rhinos Rob Burrow Super League

After eight years away from his boyhood club, Leeds Rhinos legend Danny McGuire has returned to AMT Headingley.

McGuire left the Rhinos as one of the greats, and departed in style as he produced one of the best individual performances in a Grand Final in 2017, as he guided the club to an eighth Super League title.

Following that victory, he joined Hull KR for two seasons, upon their return back to Super League. He played 45 matches for the Robins, scoring nine tries before retirement.

Staying at the Rovers to be their Head of Recruitment, McGuire stepped up to assistant coach in 2020, and held that role until the end of 2024, where he would take on the first head coach role of his career with Castleford Tigers.

However, the former half-back had a torrid time as Tigers boss, and lasted just 18 matches into a three-year contract. He was replaced by Director of Rugby Chris Chester, who combined roles for the remainder of the season.

Since his departure in July, it has been unconfirmed as to what the Super League icon’s next steps were, but this week it has been revealed he will return to the Rhinos to work in a newly-created role.

Danny McGuire gives touching five-word statement as Leeds Rhinos legend returns “home”

McGuire will take the title of Rugby League Impact and Growth Manager, as he looks to help inspire the next generation of rugby league players in West Yorkshire. After coming through the Rhinos academy himself, he will now work with the Leeds Rhinos foundation to encourage children across the region to take up the game and start their own path to becoming a rugby league player.

Super League’s third-highest try scorer, McGuire, took to social media to comment on his return to the club he became a legend at, and revealed how excited he was to re-join the West Yorkshire outfit.

In a short, five-word statement, he said: “Good to be back home” – as he looks forward to his new venture at the club he spent 16 seasons as a player.
