Appearing on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, the England and United hero revealed that he knew someone who had spoken to the hierarchy of the Scottish Premiership giants about replacing Russell Martin.

And that name seems to be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Champions League-winning goal hero last managed earlier this year in a short stint with Besiktas, but previously was in charge of United between 2018 and 2021.

Danny Rohl is the frontrunner with the bookies as things stand following Steven Gerrard‘s withdrawal from the process. Kevin Muscat is also under consideration.

Scholes’ revelation goes to show that Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe are working on other options, not widely touted, too.

He said: “I was actually with a lad the other night who told me he was actually going to meet Rangers. I’m not sure if he did but his name’s not been mentioned.

“I don’t think he was going for it. They contacted him and he was going to meet him in London the day after.”

Nicky Butt added: “Oh, I know who you mean.”

Refusing to name Solskjaer, host Paddy McGuinness asked if it was a current manager, as he sought a clue. Scholes bluntly replied: “No.”

Then asked if the unnamed figure had previously managed Man United, Scholes added: “No comment. But funnily enough, his name’s not been mentioned.”

Butt said:”[It’s] Ole you are talking about, aren’t you?”

With a smirk across his face, Scholes added: “No comment.”

Current Rangers CEO Patrick Stewart was previously in interim chief executive at Man United during the 2023/24 season.
