Emmerdale newcomer Chris Coghill is no stranger to sinister and controversial roles, but his latest one might come as a surprise to soap fans.

His “vulnerable” yet “psychopathic” character Kev has certainly thrown a spanner in the works for Robert Sugden and Aaron Dingle, just as fans were ecstatic over Robron’s reunion. With Robert (Ryan Hawley) yet to tell Aaron (Danny Miller) about his secret husband, and with Kev now out of prison amid the bombshell that he is dying, the truth comes out next week as Aaron spots Robert and Kev sharing a kiss in public.

Robert’s attempt to live two separate lives falls apart, and actor Chris warned that Aaron and Kev won’t see eye-to-eye. He told us: “We don’t like each other. There is a lot of tension. It has to be said, Danny Miller is a brilliant actor.”

Kev isn’t someone to be messed with though, and it could pave the way for some explosive scenes. “Kev is unhinged,” revealed Chris. “There are genuine feelings there, but they’re not quite what they should be. He’s an incredibly dangerous person. Kev wouldn’t have any qualms about physically attacking anybody, apart from possibly Robert.”

But Chris insists that while Kev is a criminal with “psychopathic tendencies”, he’s absolutely “not another baddie”. He shares: “One day I can be a psychopath and the next day I’m doing something quite touching. Baking cakes.”

Chris almost turned down the role too, but was soon won around. He confessed: “When I was offered it and I was told he dies I thought, I like Emmerdale and I’d like to be around for a bit, so I’d want to come and do something that had some potential longevity.

“But when I was told what the character was and I came in and was told they weren’t meeting anybody else I thought, actually this sounds like a right laugh.”

As for Kev, as the truth about his identity comes out to the Dingles and Robert’s secret is exposed, Chris said fans can expect plenty of drama. “Charity and Chas get involved and there’s a little bit with Cain,” he teased. “What I’m really disappointed about is Will Ash [who plays Caleb Miligan] is one of my best friends in the entire universe and I’ve walked past him once in the show.”

It doesn’t bode well for Robert, as Aaron’s discovery next week comes mere moments after he tells his family about things being back on with his lover. Chris joked: “Robert is an absolutely compulsive liar, he can not be trusted as far as you can throw him.”

Ryan didn’t seem to agree though, pointing out to us: “That’s Chris’ take! Robert does try to tell him, he tries to tell him several times.” Robert’s left with some explaining to do though as he’s mortified to find out Aaron has witnessed his entire cosy exchange with newly released Kev in the village – but can Robron get through their latest hiccup? We certainly hope so!
