Brazil international defender Paulo Henrique has revealed he is trying to get Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes to sign for his club.

The pair combined for Brazil’s first goal in their 3-2 defeat to Japan on Tuesday, as Guimaraes threaded a superb through ball through the Japanese defence for the right-back to latch on to before lashing the ball past goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.

It was the 29-year-old’s first Brazil camp and it was his second camp after making his debut in the 5-0 win over South Korea on Friday.

Henrique plays for Brazilian side Vasco Da Gama, who are based in Rio de Janeiro, and when reflecting on his first taste of playing for his national team, he has revealed he has jokingly tried to convince Guimaraes, as well as Tottenham Hotspur forward Richarlison, to join him at the club.

Newcastle United continue their UEFA Champions League campaign as they face Jose Mourinho’s Benfica on October 21. Fans can watch the game on the TNT Sports Prime Video channel.

“The group welcomed me really well. There were some guys I already knew, who I’d played against in Rio,” Paulo Henrique told Globo Esporte (via SportWitness).

“And there’s also Bruno Guimaraes and Richarlison, who are Vasco fans. I’m trying to take both of them to Vasco!”

Guimaraes grew up in Rio de Janeiro but came through the youth system at Audax, rather than Vasco, before moving to Atletico Paranaense.

The 27-year-old is under contract at Newcastle until 2028 having joined the club from Lyon in January 2022. The Magpies will hope to have him tied down for his best years and while a move back to Brazil in the near future would be unlikely, a return to Brazil before the end of his career is not beyond the realms of possibility.
