Mia Griffin was twice on the podium at the World Tour race in China – for 2nd and 3rd on stages – but ended the final day of action today on the tarmac
Mia Griffin (Roland Le Dévoluy) may have enjoyed her strongest results of the season in China over recent days – with two World Tour podiums – but today she finished Tour of Chongming Island (2.WWT) on the tarmac.
The Irish champion was at the front of the bunch sprinting for the finish line when Clara Copponi (Lidl-Trek) moved to her left and bumped another rider, causing the frontrunners to crash at high speed. Griffin was among the fallers, video below, and Copponi was disqualified from the race.
Griffin had started the day 3rd overall, after finishing 3rd and 2nd in the bunch sprints that had settled the first two stages. However, on the final stage today a nine-rider breakaway got clear with 4km to go and made it all the way, by 15 seconds. It meant the bunch Griffin crashed in today was sprinting for 10th on the stage.
Josie Talbot (Liv AlUla Jayco) won the stage from Riejanne Markus (Lidl-Trek) and Anne Knijnenburg (VolkerWessels Cycling Team). The time they gained re-ordered the general classification, with Knijnenburg winning the race by one second from stage 2 winner, and yellow jersey today, Sofie van Rooijen (UAE Team ADQ).
Griffin was able to get back on her bike and finish the stage, in 46th. She was credited with the same time as the group she was with when she crashed, 15 seconds down on the winner. That saw her slide down the final GC, from 3rd this morning to 11th place.
While that was disappointing – especially after two World Tour podiums and looking set for the final podium – she told stickybottle she had not broken any bones in the crash. She is down to ride the one-day Tour of Guangxi on Sunday.
