Portugal’s home prices posted their biggest increase on record, underscoring a worsening housing crunch that’s testing the government’s response.

Values surged 23% in September from a year earlier, the fastest pace since Confidencial Imobiliario, a Portuguese independent databank, began tracking the data in 1988. The average price reached €2,885 per square meter in mainland Portugal, up from €1,573 in 2020.
