Emma Deeth came out tops in one of the categories of the Highland Challenge, an annual competition between camera clubs based in the north.

This year it was hosted by Inverness Camera Club. Each club can submit 10 images – colour or monochrome and on any subject in print or digital projected image form.

Two of East Sutherland Camera Club’s entries this year were by Emma Deeth from Tain.

Club secretary Andy Kirby said: “It’s easy to dismiss holiday shots as quick shots taken for the memory and no more but visiting foreign parts presents new creative opportunities for the serious photographer.

“The windmills on the Greek island of Mykonos must have been photographed millions of times and are the most photographed spot on the island. Emma, however, created something very special from her trip there.

“So much so that the judge at the Highland Challenge decided it justified the best monochrome print award.

“Monochrome might be thought by some to be old-fashioned, after all you own a great camera or camera phone which can take superb colour shots so why not use it.

“However, they can all take great monochrome shots too. Monochrome avoids what can sometimes be the distraction of colour and allows the eye to focus on what Emma found appealed to her: the structure, texture and interlocking shapes of the scene.

“She was also faced with something other than the usual bright blue Greek sky and monochrome enabled her to make the most of it. Well done Emma!”
