Nicola Walker series Annika has finally confirmed a BBC release date for its second season.

The detective black comedy features The Split star as DI Annika Strandhed, who is tasked with heading up the Marine Homicide Unit (MHU) to solve murders off the Scottish coast.

Nearly two years after season 2 aired on U&Alibi, it has landed a BBC release, with a premiere date of 2 August on BBC One at 9pm. Fans will also be able to watch all six episodes on iPlayer at the same time.

It follows a similar release pattern to season 1, which premiered on Alibi in 2021 before hitting the BBC nearly two years later.

As well as the return of Walker, the new(ish) season also features the addition of Doctor Who‘s Varada Sethu as DS Harper Weston, while returning cast members include Jamie Sives as DS Michael McAndrews, Katie Leung as DC Blair Ferguson, and Paul McGann as Jake Strathearn.

The show’s second season has received praise from critics, with The Herald suggesting it can “restore one’s faith in TV drama”.

Fans wanting to see more of Walker can catch another police drama, Babylon, on Netflix – though you only have a couple of weeks left to watch on the streamer.

Originally released in 2014, the comedy drama focuses on a London police force that wants to change-up its image, with an American brought in to help – though they end up clashing with the established workers.

Meanwhile, Walker was recently confirmed to be joining “twisted” new Disney+ comedy series called Alice and Steve.

Annika season 2 will premiere on 2 August on BBC One at 9pm, with all episodes available on BBC iPlayer the same day.
