After going down by 7 wickets in the first ODI on Sunday (October 19) at Optus Stadium, the Indian team will face Australia in the must-win second 50-over match at Adelaide Oval on Thursday (October 23). In the rain-hit series opener, Indian batters could only manage to score 136 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 26 overs and then failed to defend the DLS-adjusted target of 131 runs against the Mitchell Marsh-led side. In the second match, which will be must-win for Shubman Gill & Co., Indian fans will expect a better performance from Indian players.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma could only manage to score 0 and 8 runs, respectively, in Perth, but they are unlikely to lose their place in the playing XI and will continue to bat at their usual positions (opener for Rohit and No. 3 for Kohli) in Adelaide. But there could be a couple of changes in the bowling unit.
For the first match, Indian team management dropped Kuldeep Yadav, but the 30-year-old spinner from Kanpur is likely to be back for the second match. It will, however, be interesting to see who makes way for him. Well, the obvious choice is Washington Sundar at the moment, but it won’t be a surprise if Nitish Kumar Reddy is left out to fit Kuldeep in.
Among other changes, Harshit Rana’s place is also under the scanner. The Delhi-based pacer failed to deliver both with the bat and ball in the first ODI, following which he faced sharp criticism from fans and experts. He could also be dropped to the bench for Prasidh Krishna.
29-year-old Krishna has played 17 ODIs for India so far, and in those 17 matches, he has dismissed 29 batters. In IPL 2025, the Karnataka-based cricketer finished as the highest wicket-taker, and he played a big role in India’s six-run win over England in the Oval Test as well on August 4, 2025.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhurv Jurel are also part of India’s ODI squad, but unless there is any injury-related issue in the batting unit, which as of now is not there, they are unlikely to get a game in Adelaide.
India’s likely playing XI for the 2nd ODI against Australia: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill (C), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, KL Rahul (WK), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna.
