Liverpool’s first team may have had trouble keeping out opponents this season. But the solid start by the under-19s in their UEFA Youth League campaign has been fashioned on clean sheets.

Successive shutouts in a goalless opener at home to Atletico Madrid and a 2-0 win at Galatasaray last time out have ensured a solid start to the competition for a side helmed by U21s coach Rob Page with U18s boss Simon Wiles as assistant.

The Reds take on Eintracht Frankfurt at the Sportpark Dreieich this afternoon (kick-off 1pm) at the halfway point of their opening league phase.

The UEFA Youth League fixtures echo the first six of those played by the senior side in the Champions League, with the top 22 qualifying for the knockout stages along with 10 teams from the Domestic Champions path.

Liverpool stand 12th in the early table while Frankfurt are in 19th after following a 4-0 home thumping of Galatasaray with a 2-1 loss at Atletico Madrid.

The Reds’ need for defensive solidity has been heightened by strikers Jayden Danns and Will Wright both missing through long-term injury, Danns expected to miss the remainder of the first stage of the tournament.

Liverpool’s attack has instead been spearheaded by 17-year-old Josh Sonni-Lambie, who has been in outstanding form this season.

His two goals in the U18 Premier League North moved him on to nine for the campaign having been among the scorers in Istanbul last month.

The teenager also took a significant step in his development by starting for the U21s in their EFL Trophy defeat at Crewe Alexandra last week.

And he Sonni-Lambie said to liverpoolfc.com: “We are really looking forward to it, we played really well in our last game, it was nice to get a goal and hopefully we can do well again.

“It was a great feeling to get my first goal for the club in Europe, it’s always special to travel away with this club.

“The UEFA Youth League is a big competition, it’s great to play against different teams and styles that we are not used to. We just want to keep our good run going and give it everything we have got.”
