New Zealand

Overrated: Beauden Barrett

Beauden Barrett’s highlight reels will always be spectacular, but over time, his Test-level form has been less consistent. For all his brilliance, especially in open play, his recent performances haven’t matched his early-career dominance. Great? Absolutely. But the aura around him now outpaces his actual output.

Underrated: Fabian Holland

Down in the engine room, Fabian Holland is quietly emerging as New Zealand’s next great lock. His work rate, physicality, and intelligence make him a standout in a country famous for producing world-class forwards. Those outside New Zealand might not realise it yet, but Holland’s ceiling is sky-high.

Australia

Overrated: Joseph Sua’ali’i

Hype came fast for Joseph Sua’ali’i. His switch from rugby league to union had fans calling him the Wallabies’ next big thing after just a few games. He’s talented and physical, but still learning the nuances of the sport. The potential is undeniable — it just hasn’t been realised yet.

Underrated: Angus Bell

Angus Bell embodies what modern props should be. Brutal in contact yet mobile and skilful, he gives Australia a real edge when fit. Injuries have slowed him down, but when healthy, he’s easily among the best looseheads around — and still doesn’t get the credit he deserves.

South Africa

Overrated: Cheslin Kolbe

For all of Cheslin Kolbe’s brilliance, recent seasons haven’t quite matched the legend. His try numbers have dipped, and while he remains dangerous for the Springboks, he’s no longer the unstoppable winger many still believe him to be. Still world-class, but no longer untouchable.

Underrated: Damian de Allende

Damian de Allende is often misjudged. Branded a crash-ball centre by critics, he offers far more — steady defence, vision, and composure in key moments. His value to South Africa’s World Cup wins can’t be overstated. Within the squad, he’s known as the man who makes everyone else’s job easier.

Argentina

Overrated: Rodrigo Isgro

Picking an overrated player in Argentina isn’t easy, but Rodrigo Isgro fits the bill by default. The winger can be thrilling one week and anonymous the next, needing more consistency to reach the elite level many project for him.

Underrated: Julián Montoya

Julián Montoya has quietly become one of rugby’s great captains. His leadership has guided Argentina to historic wins over every southern hemisphere power. Add in his technical precision and calm authority, and it’s clear how vital he is to the Pumas’ rise.
