Daryl Powell’s Wakefield Trinity enjoyed a brilliant first season back in Super League this year, as the 2024 Championship winners reached the playoffs at the first time of asking.
Beating the majority of the teams that finished above them at least once this year, Trinity are progressing well and are slowly becoming more established and more competitive both on and off the field.
The club have already announced five signings, with three of those coming from Australia. Manly hooker Jazz Tevaga, who is currently playing for Samoa in this year’s Pacific Championships, Tyson Smoothy of Brisbane Broncos and Tray Lolesio from the Queensland Cup will all make the move over to West Yorkshire for 2026, in what looks set to be a formidable squad.
Now, the club have further improved their squad for next year, after picking up a former Super League player recently released by their local rivals.
Released Super League man signs Wakefield Trinity contract
Outside back Will Tate has put pen to paper to become a Trinity player, as he signs a one-year deal. The 23-year-old last played for Castleford Tigers, and made five appearances in the most recent campaign, scoring five tries. Three of those touchdowns came in the final round of the season, as Castleford almost pulled off an incredible shock victory over St Helens, but ultimately lost out 26-24.
Tate, who can play wing or centre, started his career in the City of Hull Academy, and went on to sign professionally at Hull KR. He made his Rovers debut as an 18-year-old in 2020, and made16 Robins appearances before moving to the Tigers for 2023.
With the recent news that winger Neil Tchamambe will be joining London Broncos for the full 2026 season, Trinity have replaced the speedster with another developing talent, and whilst Tate won’t be first choice, will provide healthy competition for the likes of Lachlan Walmsley and Tom Johnstone.
On joining his new club, Tate said: “I’m really looking forward to joining Wakefield. Everything about the club feels and a club on this trajectory is very exciting to be part of.”
Ste Mills, Trinity’s Director of Rugby, added: “We are delighted to bring Will to Wakefield Trinity, he’s a player we have been monitoring during his time at Castleford Tigers & with Neil going to London on a season long loan, it’s a great opportunity for Will to showcase his talent and grow within our environment.”
