Ma’a Nonu continues to drink from the fountain of youth as the All Blacks legend notched up another insane milestone this weekend.
Not only is the double Rugby World Cup winner the oldest player to ever feature in France’s Top 14, but he is thriving in doing so, scoring in each of his three appearances for Toulon this season.
The latest of which was against fellow French giants Racing 92 as he helped his club to a 45-21 victory at the Stade Mayol with a powerful 25-minute cameo.
Age-defying Ma’a Nonu
That match saw Nonu earn his 100th cap for RC Toulon, the third team in his career with which he has reached that milestone, having done so with the Hurricanes and All Blacks previously.
The legendary centre played 103 Test matches for the All Blacks and 126 games for the Hurricanes during his storied career in New Zealand, where he also played 39 times for the Blues and nine games with the Highlanders.
Paired with his 61 caps for Wellington, 12 with the Black Rams in Japan and 44 appearances for USA club, the San Diego Legion, Nonu is on track to play 500 professional rugby before hanging up his boots, which he shows no signs of doing.
In fact, he has already reached that milestone if you include his two matches for the Junior All Blacks and Barbarians, respectively.
In February of this year, the 43-year-old rejoined RC Toulon, signing as a medical joker with his club for the injured Charles Ollivon. A month later, he became the oldest player to play in France’s premier division – a record he continues to break with each passing game.
Toulon boss Pierre Mignoni was originally reluctant to play the experienced back in the competition, but in July, the club opted to offer the former All Black a contract extension for the 2025/26 season, which will see him extend his career past his 44th birthday.
At the peak of his powers, Nonu was the best number 12 in the world and still displays some of the skill and power that he became so renowned for as he consistently produces age-defying performances.

However, he has also dabbled in playing the loose forwards for Toulon, where his powerhouse ball carrying and abrasive defence remains a real asset.
“A legend of the club and international rugby, the All Black centre will continue his extraordinary career for another season in the colours of Toulon,” A club statement after his extension read.
“A true source of inspiration for the rest of the Rouge & Noir squad, his return to the top level has been unanimously welcomed.”
Toulon currently sit fifth on the overall Top 14 standings after winning four of their opening six matches of the season. In December, Nonu could also mark his return to Europe’s top competition with Toulon set to play Edinburgh, Bath, Munster and Gloucester in the Investec Champions Cup.
