Orsett-based South Essex Wildlife Hospital has urged residents to think of their “wild neighbours” when out and about after helping care for the rescued fox.

The wildlife hospital rescues and rehabilitates thousands of injured and orphaned animals every year.

A spokesperson for the charity said: “It’s amazing what something as small as a plastic bag can do.

“Rescued by the team at Greenwich Wildlife Network, this poor fox was spotted with the remains of a white plastic bag around her waist and neck. Luckily, she was quickly captured and rushed over to see our vet team.

“Amazingly, the plastic wasn’t too tight and we were able to quickly remove it. With no signs of injury, she was monitored to make sure all was well before being returned to Greenwich Wildlife Network volunteers for release, but things could definitely have been much worse.

“Litter is one of the most common things we see in the world of wildlife rescue. If it’s not entanglements in plastic rings (especially the ones found on beer cans), it’s discarded fighting line, pet food cans, plastic bottles and much more.

“Please think of our wild neighbours when out and about and take your litter home. The next fox may not be quite so lucky.”
