A vocal minority of the terminally online took umbrage with the release’s heroine, as well as some industry drama involving employees at the first-party PlayStation developer.
But any boycotts that may or may not have been entertained failed spectacularly, as the game debuted fourth in Circana’s physical and digital software sales charts for September.

The sales are accurate through 4th October, so just a couple of days are being tracked here. According to analyst Mat Piscatella, however, the release is performing consistently with predecessor Ghost of Tsushima.
That’s despite the former launching to a larger PS4 install base during the height of the pandemic at a cheaper overall price point. We think Sony will be largely satisfied with these results.
Elsewhere, the PS5 enjoyed a 10% increase in unit sales compared to August, despite its price increase coming into effect. It couldn’t, of course, overcome the brand-new Switch 2.
Borderlands 4 was the best-selling game of the month, generating the highest launch month dollar sales in series history.
Meanwhile, survival horror Silent Hill F charted in seventh position, while strategy RPG remake Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles moved up into ninth.
Digimon Story: Time Stranger also charted in 13th position, rounding out a great month for new Japanese releases.
