Zampa and Connolly star as Australia take series win over India in Adelaide
Adam Zampa’s four-wicket haul and Cooper Connolly’s unbeaten 61 helped guide Australia to a two-wicket win over India, giving them an unassailable 2-0 lead in the One Day International series.
Zampa was supported well by Xavier Bartlett as they halted India’s middle over momentum after Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer both scored fifties.
However, a late blitz from Axar Patel and Harshit Rana dragged India up to 264.
Australia started the chase with composure and built regular partnerships, with many top order batters making starts anchored around Matthew Short’s 71.
However, when Short was caught by Mohammed Siraj, who had dropped him on 55, the game looked in the balance with the hosts five down and needing another 80 runs.
Then came a Mitchell Owen blitz, alongside a composed 50 from Cooper Connolly as Australia wrestled back control.
Owen fell for 36, triggering a cascade of wickets, but Connolly remained until the very end to get Australia over the line with two wickets and 22 balls to spare.
It is the perfect preparation for Australia, who start their defence of the Ashes next month live on TNT Sports and discovery+.Watch: Winning moment as Australia beat India in second ODI

Australia get over the line – just
Australia have wrapped up the series win with a game to spare. They controlled the chase to perfection, helped by starts from Travis Head and Matt Renshaw while Matthew Short anchored the top order with a half-century.
However, India clawed their way back and looked to be favourites when Short fell for 74, but Cooper Connolly and Mitchell Owen put the foot on the accelerator to get well ahead of the chase.
Owen’s dismissal triggered a cascade of wickets, but Connolly remained at the crease and kept his cool to wrap up the win with two wickets and 22 balls to spare.
Gill: “It’s never easy to defend that total when you drop catches”
India captain Shubman Gill speaking to Adam Gilchrist on FOX Sports: “I think we had just enough runs on the board and it’s never easy to defend that kind of total when you drop a couple of catches.
“In this game I wouldn’t say that much because both teams played 50 overs, and I think the wicket settled nicely after 15-20 overs.
“It’s never easy coming back to play competitive cricket but I’m very pleased the way he batted.”
Connolly: “You always want to play as many games for Australia as you can”
Adam Gilchrist speaking to Cooper Connolly on FOX Sports: “It’s never the reality, I was quite nervous coming out to bat, but I just took it all in and enjoyed it as much as I could.
“It always sparked something in me, you always want to play as many games for Australia as you can.
“It was nice, but it’s a team game. We got the win, we got the series win, so we’ll look forward to the next game.”
All over! Australia beat India by two wickets!
Connolly has to farm the strike here and get it done this over. Arshdeep continues, can he produce heroics?
Connolly runs brilliantly to get two after placing it wide of long off. He squeezes it away for two more and the scores are level.
In comes the field. And Arshdeep bowls a wide and that will be that!
Australia 260-8 (Connolly 56, Zampa 0) need 5 runs off 24 balls
Adam Zampa needs to survive one ball here. India are offering him the single. Not sure why, they should have more in for the catch.
It hits the pad but sliding well, well down leg.
Wicket! Starc c Axar b Siraj 44 – Australia 260-8 need 5 runs off 25 balls
Siraj’s last over. Will Connolly finish it now with wickets falling? He takes a single to give Starc the strike.
What a drive! Perfect technique from the tailender as he takes advantage of the field being up to get a boundary. One shot away.
Starc chips to point! This is getting much nervier than the Aussies would like!
Australia 255-7 (Connolly 56, Starc 0) need 10 runs off 30 balls
Starc is out at nine. A wicket now could set up a tasty finish. Maybe, just maybe?
Leftie against leftie and it misses Starc’s outside edge by millimetres!
Wicket! Bartlett c sub (Jurel) b Arshdeep 3 – Australia 255-7 need 10 runs off 33 balls
Arshdeep returns, and Bartlett immediately gets Connolly back on strike. Two big hits will do it now.
Bartlett wants to finish things off in style but mistimes his slog and the substitute fielder Dhruv Jurel takes the catch!
Australia 252-6 (Connolly 55, Bartlett 2) need 13 runs off 36 balls
If Siraj can get Connolly out, you never know. However, he is looking rock solid and happy to knock this chase off with singles and twos.
Siraj has now hurt his finger and looks in some discomfort. He sees out the over though.
Australia 248-6 (Connolly 52, Bartlett 1) need 17 runs off 42 balls
Xavier Bartlett comes in, and it goes straight through, but the umpire gives not out. There was definitely a noise, I thought it hit the stumps!
Replays show it clipped the thigh pad.
Wicket! Owen c Arshdeep b Washington 36 – Australia 246-6 need 19 runs off 45 balls
One last throw of the dice. Washington Sundar returns.
Mitch Owen holes out to long on, but it is surely too little too late.
Owen departs for 36 off 23 and has surely won the game, even if he won’t be there for the finish.
Watch: India pile the pressure on Australia as Siraj catches Short in the deep
This feels like a long time ago

India pile the pressure on Australia as Siraj catches Short in the deep

Australia 243-5 (Connolly 50, Owen 35) need 22 runs off 48 balls
Siraj returns, trousers tied up well, I hope. But Connolly gets in on the action and drives for six over extra cover! It’s only a matter of time now.
The 50 partnership comes up after just 34 balls. Connolly then pulls into the gap for four before dashing for two off the final ball to bring up a fantastic 50.
He has kept his cool, even after Short fell, to guide Australia to within touching distance of the win.
Australia 229-5 (Connolly 37, Owen 35) need 36 runs off 54 balls
Axar continues for his final over as Rana limps off. India need him to get a wicket or two here.
Owen slog-sweeps the penultimate delivery for four, before following it up with a huge six over cow corner!
It’s looking pretty dire for India, but there was an amusing moment a few overs ago when Siraj lost his trousers stopping a boundary.

‘Keep an eye on his trousers!’ – Siraj in all sorts of bother on the boundary
Video credit: TNT Sports
Australia 216-5 (Connolly 35, Owen 24) need 49 runs off 60 balls
Owen takes on Rana again, and muscles him for six! He is getting Australia closer and closer to the series win.
Now Rana has cramp again! What’s going on with India’s seamers?? Rana continues, but I would be surprised if he returns for another over.
He closes it out well.
Australia 207-5 (Connolly 34, Owen 17) need 58 runs off 66 balls
Siraj has cramp now. India’s seamers are dropping like flies as they quench their thirst with pickle juice. When did that become a thing to cure cramp?
Tidy over from Axar.
Australia 204-5 (Connolly 33, Owen 15) need 62 runs off 72 balls
Rana picked up cramp when taking the wicket but is fine to keep going. Arshdeep, on the other hand, has gone off to get treatment for the same issue.
Owen plays a lovely back-foot punch and finds the boundary. He’s not one to hang around and can take the game away from India very quickly.
He then pulls wide of Siraj, who tries to cut it off in unorthodox fashion and just about does so to save two, before Owen flicks over square leg for six!
Owen has wrestled momentum right back in Australia’s favour.
Australia 190-5 (Connolly 32, Owen 2) need 75 runs off 78 balls
Just when you think the game is over, it takes another twist! Axar is back on to target new man Mitch Owen.
Good bowling from the left arm spinner and the pressure is back on Australia and Connolly.
Wicket! Short c Siraj b Rana 74 – Australia 187-5 need 77 runs off 84 balls
Bosh! Connolly absolutely leathers a cover drive for four. Even the camera can’t keep up!
All of a sudden, Australia look in control and the run rate is back below run-a-ball. Short emphasises this by pulling for four more.
But the short ball plan finally gets to Matthew and he miscues a hook to Siraj at midwicket and this time he holds on!
Australia 175-4 (Short 69, Connolly 25) need 90 runs off 90 balls
Short eyes up Washington, and sweeps him for six! Pressure back on India now.
Washington comes back well and restricts the hosts to nine.
Australia 166-4 (Short 62, Connolly 23) need 99 runs off 96 balls
Back to pace. Harshit Rana replaces Axar.
India are taking plenty of time to get their field right but so far so good as Rana concedes just three.
India can now take a new ball at one end, as per the new rules.
Australia 163-4 (Short 61, Connolly 21) need 102 runs off 102 balls
Washington continues. Who will blink first in this tense chase? Australia showed signs of aggression in the last over of spin.
Mitch Owen is a powerful batter in at seven, but after that, Australia are left with bowlers.
Connolly gets another four through point and is looking good as he moves into the 20s.
Australia 155-4 (Short 59, Connolly 15) need 110 runs off 108 balls
Overpitched from Axar and that is driven for four by Connolly. Three balls later, he sweeps fine of Iyer, who can’t get around quickly enough to prevent four more.
Ten crucial runs off that over.
Australia 145-4 (Short 58, Connolly 6) need 120 runs off 114 balls
In the air from Short, but lands safely! He tried to sweep but edged it onto his helmet and will have a quick concussion test. He is taking chances with his wicket.
After a drinks break, we are all go until the end.
Australia 141-4 (Short 56, Connolly 4) need 124 runs off 120 balls
What damage will Short do now? He is struggling to make an impression on Axar as the dots build up.
Just two from the over and the run rate is over a run a ball.
Australia 139-4 (Short 55, Connolly 3) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 29
How long will India keep this spin duo bowling? Both have plenty of overs in the bank.
Short drives uppishly straight to Siraj, who drops it! That is an absolute sitter. Short had already turned around to walk off there.
Huge, huge moment.
Australia 135-4 (Short 52, Connolly 2) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 28
Cooper Connolly joins Short in the middle and India are right back in it all of a sudden. Short is suddenly under a lot of pressure as the set batter.
These two spinners can take control of the game very quickly if Australia aren’t careful and Axar follows up with another tidy over.
Wicket! Carey b Washington 9 – Australia 132-4
Washington is back for India so it is spin from both ends. Carey goes for a quick single and gets in in time after a direct hit.
Final ball, and Carey tries the slog-sweep but cannot get bat on ball and Washington bowls him!
Australia 130-3 (Short 50, Carey 8) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 26
Short cuts to point and that will be his half-century! He knows his job’s not done yet.
Axar races through the rest of the over and just four off it.
Australia 126-3 (Short 48, Carey 6) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 25
Carey drives Arshdeep for three. Then Short gets power behind his drive and pierces the gap to get a much-needed boundary.
After that Renshaw wicket, Australia are asserting control once more and are well-placed halfway through the chase.
Australia 117-3 (Short 42, Carey 3) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 24
Short is still at the crease and will hope to go well beyond 50 and anchor this chase.
Five from that over.
Australia 112-3 (Short 38, Carey 2) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 23
Arshdeep is back. What can he offer?
Carey has begun tentatively which is fine for Australia as they are a few overs ahead of the chase.
Australia 110-3 (Short 37, Carey 1) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 22
Alex Carey is in now. He will play a big part in next month’s Ashes for Australia but now he needs to get his team over the line.
He gets underway off the final ball. Three runs and a wicket from Axar.
Wicket! Renshaw b Axar 30 – Australia 109-3
Breakthrough! Renshaw comes down the ground but Axar adjusts his length and beats him!
The ball crashes into middle stump and Renshaw goes for 30.
Australia 107-2 (Short 36, Renshaw 30) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 21
Siraj is bowling tidily but tidy bowling is not enough for India.
Australia get four runs closer to their target.
Australia 103-2 (Short 34, Renshaw 27) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 20
Axar is okay to bowl and here he is. Can he find the breakthrough that has eluded his teammates?
Australia manage him well though, and take six runs to pass 100.
Australia 96-2 (Short 32, Renshaw 23) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 19
Siraj is back, and immediately targets the stumps. India need wickets badly.
Brief cheers from the crowd as Kohli takes a catch but very clearly a bump-ball.
Australia 93-2 (Short 29, Renshaw 22) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 18
Renshaw lines up Rana, and hoicks him over midwicket for the third six of the innings, more than India got in all 50 overs.
Gill is desperate to get Axar Patel back on the pitch to restore some control as Short finds four more wide of cover.
Australia 81-2 (Short 25, Renshaw 15) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 17
Good running by Australia to grab a quick single. With the left-hand right-hand combo, it is harder for Rana to settle.
The sun has well and truly set and the lights are on here at the Adelaide Oval.
Australia 76-2 (Short 24, Renshaw 11) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 16
Chance for India, but Axar Patel spills it at point. He should be taking that and Short gets a reprieve.
To make matters worse, Axar has headed off to get some treatment, and it looks to be his left thumb which could affect his bowling.

‘Huge wicket’ for India as Kohli takes the catch to get rid of Head
Video credit: TNT Sports
Australia 71-2 (Short 23, Renshaw 8) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 15
You would imagine that Rana and Nitish will share the duties of the fifth bowler today. These overs could be pivotal to stop Australia from getting ahead of the game.
And again, it looks like a strong over before Short cuts away for four.
Australia 65-2 (Short 18, Renshaw 7) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 14
Now that Head is gone, it is back to seam with Nitish Kumar Reddy. Renshaw looks to make his mark here and improvises to scoop for four.
Eight off the over.
Australia 57-2 (Short 15, Renshaw 2) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 13
Matt Renshaw is in at four, for just his second ODI. There are two somewhat inexperienced batters at the crease and India will hope to turn the screw.
Big confusion and a stumble from Short and he is well short of the striker’s end! Iyer needs a direct hit but can’t find it!
Wicket! Head c Kohli b Rana 28 – Australia 54-2
Rana continues. Head looks to flick but skies it up in the air!
Virat Kohli gets under it at mid-off and makes no mistake with the catch! The danger man is back in the pavilion and India are right back in it!
Australia 53-1 (Head 28, Short 13) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 12
Time for a bit of spin now, and it will be Washington Sundar first up. He immediately draws the edge but there is no slip for the catch.
It’s a bit too easy for Australia at the moment, who exchange singles throughout the over to pass 50.
Australia 48-1 (Head 27, Short 9) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 11
Change of bowler for India as they introduce Harshit Rana, whose lower order runs dragged the tourists to a competitive total.
It’s a tidy over, until the final ball, which Head slices for four over third. Bit lucky.
Australia 42-1 (Head 22, Short 8) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 10
The wicket of Marsh has reined Head in a little here as he looks to negotiate the final over of the powerplay.
But Short ends the powerplay with a maximum, hooked a long way over square leg!
A pretty even powerplay.
Australia 33-1 (Head 20, Short 1) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 9
Siraj continues for his fifth over. Can he follow up Arshdeep’s good work at the other end?
So far, so good as Head cannot score off the first five balls. But he gets a quick single off the final delivery.
Australia 32-1 (Head 19, Short 1) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 8
Matt Short comes in at three, I assume still missing that fingernail after a fielding mishap earlier.
He gets off the mark with a tickle down to third.
Wicket! Marsh c Rahul b Arshdeep 11 – Australia 30-1
Now Marsh follows up with four through midwicket! Australia’s batters have settled and are now on the charge.
But it’s the commentator’s curse! Marsh looks to go over the top but edges it behind to Rahul!
Australia 26-0 (Marsh 7, Head 18) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 7
The worms are neck-and-neck so far. It was in this over that Australia struck with two wickets.
Shreyas Iyer saves another run with a chase down to long-off.
But Head finally gets a boundary and it’s a biggie! He flicks Siraj well over square leg for six.
Australia 15-0 (Marsh 5, Head 9) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 6
India are up for this and are piling on the pressure. Shubman Gill dives to his left to save a couple runs as Marsh struggles to score.
Head gets two more in the leg side. Australia are still yet to get a boundary.
Australia 11-0 (Marsh 4, Head 7) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 5
Swing and a miss for Marsh. He’s getting frustrated as Siraj racks up the dots for India.
He takes a single off the final ball to keep strike and dodge the maiden.
Australia 10-0 (Marsh 3, Head 7) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 4
Good fielding by Rana to save two runs. Australia were excellent in the field and India need to be too.
And as I say that, Nitish Kumar Reddy puts down a chance at midwicket! It was a one-handed dive well above his head so he could have saved four runs there actually.
Australia 8-0 (Marsh 3, Head 5) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 3
Siraj appeals for lbw, but it hit Head outside the line. These are not easy conditions to bat in, but the ball won’t swing like this for long.
Another swing and a miss, this time Marsh is the culprit.
Australia 5-0 (Marsh 3, Head 2) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 2
Arshdeep Singh from the other end, and immediately generates swing away from the left-handed Head. Dangerous moment for Head who plays and misses outside off.
Good over, just one run conceded.
Australia 4-0 (Marsh 3, Head 1) Target: 265, Overs bowled: 1
After a couple of blocks, Mitch Marsh gets off the mark with a push into the off side for three.
Head also nicks a single and both openers are off the mark in the first over.
Second innings underway in Adelaide!
The sun is setting, and out come Mitch Marsh and Travis Head. Can they get Australia off to a solid start or will India pile on the pressure in the powerplay?
Mohammed Siraj is pretty handy with the new ball. Can he get quick wickets? Here comes the first ball!
Blocked to point.

Can Australia wrap up series to continue Ashes preparation?
While there is no doubt a lot at stake in this series between two cricketing titans, you would imagine the Aussies have one eye on the Ashes in less than a month’s time.
Several players today will be hoping to feature in the first Test in Perth, including veteran seamers Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, who might have extra responsibility to shoulder as captain Pat Cummins looks increasingly likely to miss out through injury.
And you can watch every ball of every Test in the Ashes live on TNT Sports and discovery+.Australia need 265 runs to win the series
Adelaide is normally a batter’s paradise, but less so today, and Australia used the conditions to their advantage, striking twice through Xavier Bartlett in the powerplay as India started slowly.
But Rohit Sharma found his feet and he and Shreyas Iyer both scored fifties to set India up nicely to target 300.
However, India’s middle order fell at regular intervals before the death as Adam Zampa spun a web, and Axar Patel lacked support as he counterattacked to a fast 44.
Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh added a late blitz at the end though to drive India to a competitive, but sub-par total.
Innings break! India 264-9 (50), Rohit 73, Zampa 4-60
Siraj has one ball to face. And he runs a leg bye to take India up to 264.
A spirited finish, but the flourish of wickets just before the death has left them around 20 or so runs short of par but they are in with a chance here.
Wicket! Arshdeep b Starc 13 – India 263-9
Starc to finish off. India steal a bye to get Rana on strike.
Rana takes a single. Then another bye to rotate the strike, as Starc fumbles at the non-strikers end with Arshdeep short of his mark.
Still just singles though for India. Can they get close to 270?
Arshdeep is bowled with one ball to go!
India 259-8 (49 overs) – Rana 22, Arshdeep 13
Here’s Bartlett’s final over. He’s had another good game and only leaks one run from this first three balls.
Arshdeep toes a slower ball in the air for two and looks to have broken his bat in the process which causes a brief delay.
Another fantastic yorker from Bartlett is followed up with a single off the final ball.
Four off the penultimate over and Bartlett finishes with 3-39 from his 10 overs. Fantastic
India 255-8 (48 overs) – Rana 21, Arshdeep 10
Is 270 too ambitious from here? Starc returns as he and Bartlett will finish things off for the Aussies.
Hello! After claiming Arshdeep can’t bat much, I have been silenced by a cover drive for four!
Rana now has three balls to make hay here but takes a quick single immediately.
And Arshdeep gets four more! Ten off the 48th.
India 245-8 (47 overs) – Rana 20, Arshdeep 1
Zampa for his final over, can he get a five-for? Rana gets a crucial four off the first ball. Every run will count.
He cuts for four more through backwards point! And again! Zampa’s final over is a big one!
Sixteen off the over as Rana opts to push for two off the final ball, surrendering the strike to Arshdeep Singh.
India 229-8 (46 overs) – Rana 5, Arshdeep 0
Rana will need to lead India to bat out the overs here. India’s tail is not the best…
They can only add three, but Rana does well to grab a quick single to keep the strike.
Wicket! Nitish st Carey b Zampa 8 – India 226-8
In is Harshit Rana, who can swing hard but not much else.
Nitish charges the final ball of the over, but misses completely. Carey whips off the bails as India are in all sorts of trouble.
Wicket! Axar c Starc b Zampa 44 – India 223-7
Axar is six away from a fifty. Can he bring it up in style?
He goes for it with an expansive drive over long off, but Starc is out there.
He holds the catch, but needs to relay it to himself as he steps over the boundary, but executes the footwork to perfection and Axar has to go!
India 223-6 (44 overs) – Axar 44, Nitish 7
Matthew Short is expected to bat, despite leaving the field with a bloody finger earlier.
Nitish drives for his first four today. He will be expected to get going from the off.
Slim pickings for India in the rest of the over though. Six from it.
India 217-6 (43 overs) – Axar 43, Nitish 2
As expected, Zampa is back. Can he remove Axar to really get into India’s tail?
Nitish pushes a drive to long-off to get off the mark. It’s very hard to judge whether India will get to 240 or 280 and a lot depends on how long Axar stays at the crease.
Just four conceded from Zampa.
India 213-6 (42 overs) – Axar 41, Nitish 0
In comes Nitish Kumar Reddy, who can bat but is more in the team for his bowling.
Dot to finish the over. Another strong over and good captaincy from Mitch Marsh again.
Wicket! Washington c Hazlewood b Bartlett 12 – India 213-6
Back to Bartlett. His slower ball goes aerial, but safe from Axar, who picks up two.
It is sensible stuff from the two in the middle, who keep rotating the strike as they wait for the bad ball.
But Washington falls for the bait as he flicks the ball out to Hazlewood at deep square leg!
India 208-5 (41 overs) – Axar 37, Washington 11
Ten overs to go, but who will bowl them. Bartlett and Starc have six between them and Zampa has three. Head continues for another over which will make up the numbers.
How will India tackle this over then? Axar shows exactly how, with a lofted straight drive for four.
Ten more for India, who are motoring along nicely.
India 198-5 (40 overs) – Axar 30, Washington 9
Mitchell Marsh is going for the kill here as he gives Starc an eighth over. Bartlett has four left, but other than that it is just spinners available.
Axar doesn’t mind one bit and drives for four off the first ball. He has looked strong against his Delhi Capitals teammate.
He then flicks for four more and is pacing his innings to perfection so far. Twelve more off that Starc over, who has been expensive by his standards.
India 186-5 (39 overs) – Axar 20, Washington 8
Change of bowler, and it is Travis Head. He traditionally torments India with the bat, but has the ball this time.
India milk six singles out of his first over. Just one boundary off the last six overs, and that was immediately followed by a wicket.
India 180-5 (38 overs) – Axar 17, Washington 5
Hazlewood continues for his final over. He has bowled brilliantly but has not picked up a wicket.
India look pretty content to just see him off and I don’t blame them.
Hazlewood finishes with 0-29 off his ten overs. He won’t get the headlines but that is such a crucial spell and it has set Australia up nicely to attack in the final 12 overs.
India 177-5 (37 overs) – Axar 16, Washington 3
Next in is Washington Sundar, a very capable batter indeed as India have two lefties at the crease.
Good comeback from Zampa to concede seven in the end
Wicket! Rahul b Zampa 11 – India 174-5
Zampa continues for his seventh over, and Rahul goes after him. It is a valiant effort on the boundary but Australia cannot save four.
And just like with Iyer, Rahul swings across the line next ball and gets bowled! India five down.
India 170-4 (36 overs) – Axar 16, Rahul 7
Rahul advances but, like most of India’s batting lineup, has no answer to Hazlewood so far.
He concedes just two runs. Exactly what the Aussies need at this moment.
India 168-4 (35 overs) – Axar 15, Rahul 6
Still Zampa, who has held up an end nicely as well as getting the crucial wicket of Iyer.
India knock him around for five more runs. They will be eyeing up at least 270.
India 163-4 (34 overs) – Axar 14, Rahul 2
Hazlewood is back as Australia look to expose India’s lower order. He picks up where he left off with four dot balls to Rahul.
Rahul edges the fifth ball, but Short cannot gather at slip! It looked like it – wait for it – fell a bit short.
Short is now short of a nail as he goes off to get treatment.
India 161-4 (33 overs) – Axar 13, Rahul 1
KL Rahul is the new batter at the crease. Can he start quickly like Axar has?
He gets off the mark immediately, but Australia have opened up both ends.
Wicket! Iyer b Zampa 61 – India 160-4
It’s attack from both ends as Iyer slaps Zampa through extra cover for four more.
But he looks to heave over cow corner next ball, but his under-edge crashes into the stumps!
India 156-3 (32 overs) – Iyer 57, Axar 13
With his 73 earlier, Rohit Sharma passed Sourav Ganguly to become India’s third-highest scorer in ODIs.
India packed their lower order with all-rounders so will need to score big in this final phase.
A direct hit helps Axar steal an extra run as he was comfortably in. Starc then goes too straight and it is an easy flick for four.
Then on the final ball, Axar plays a square drive to add four more. Good over for India.
India 143-3 (31 overs) – Iyer 56, Axar 2
There may be a new batter at one end, but Iyer is offering no respite at the other as he pulls over midwicket for four.
Six more runs off that over and another drinks break.
India 137-3 (30 overs) – Iyer 51, Axar 1
In comes left-handed all-rounder Axar Patel, whose batting has come on leaps and bounds in the past few years.
He has been given a lovely platform to accelerate, can he get India towards 300?
A wild drive last ball of the over hints at his desire to get going.
Wicket! Rohit c Hazlewood b Starc 73 – India 135-3
Starc returns. He has five overs left, so will try and break the partnership with a short spell here.
Rohit goes for another pull but mistimes it! Hazlewood is out there and takes the regulation catch and just like that, the partnership is broken!
India 135-2 (29 overs) – Rohit 73, Iyer 50
Iyer drives into the off side to bring up a stylish 50 – his 23rd in just 72 ODIs alongside five centuries.
Rohit targets the square leg boundary again and adds four more with his slog-sweep.
Six more for India.
India 129-2 (28 overs) – Rohit 68, Iyer 49
Back to Short. Appeal for lbw but it is speculative.
That’s closer though, as Iyer pulls just beyond Zampa at fine leg for four. Zampa did get a finger on it.
India’s partnership has passed beyond 100 this over too and Iyer is closing in on a fifty as Rohit drives the last ball for four.
India 117-2 (27 overs) – Rohit 63, Iyer 43
More frustration for the tourists. This match is ebbing and flowing nicely.
Zampa concedes just two.
India 115-2 (26 overs) – Rohit 62, Iyer 42
Australia are starting to frustrate India with a lack of boundaries now.
Connolly concedes just three having returned to the action
India 112-2 (25 overs) – Rohit 61, Iyer 40
With spin looking to dominate the next few overs, Iyer has brought out the floppy hat to bat in.
A quicker ball from Zampa catches Rohit by surprise but lands safely. He then plays a gorgeous inside-out drive for four over extra cover next ball.
I don’t know what looked better, that drive from Rohit or Iyer batting in that hat.
India 105-2 (24 overs) – Rohit 56, Iyer 38
Matthew Short now comes on for a bowl, and concedes a single first ball to bring up India’s hundred.
A pretty indifferent start from the off-spinner, who goes for six singles. Too easy for India.
India 99-2 (23 overs) – Rohit 53, Iyer 35
Rohit also forced Australia to use up both their reviews on him, to no avail.
Five off the Zampa over, all singles. Australia need to break this partnership soon.
India 94-2 (22 overs) – Rohit 50, Iyer 33
Spin both ends, with the left arm Cooper Connolly coming on. Iyer is one of the best players in the world against left arm spin.
A single off the third ball gives Rohit the chance to get to 50. Can he do it?
Yes he can! He struggled at the start but stuck around to bring up a fantastic half-century under pressure.
India 92-2 (21 overs) – Rohit 49, Iyer 32
Time for some spin, and it is the leggie Adam Zampa.
He extracts some turn, beating Rohit’s outside edge with the fourth ball, but gets swept the ball after as Rohit moves to 49.
Dot off the final ball, so Rohit will have to wait to get to 50.
India 86-2 (20 overs) – Rohit 44, Iyer 31
Bartlett responds well as Iyer cannot get him away after taking the strike following the first ball.
But as I say that, he manages to hack away the final ball to get two more runs, but much better from Australia.
India 83-2 (19 overs) – Rohit 43, Iyer 29
Now Rohit goes for it over square leg. There’s a fielder out there on the boundary but he can just watch as it sails over his head for six! India are pushing on.
And he goes again! Same area, same result. Rohit has seen enough and is going after Mitch Owen.
Iyer wants to get in on the action, driving straight for four.
Seventeen of that over. How will Australia respond?
India 66-2 (18 overs) – Rohit 30, Iyer 25
Xavier Bartlett has taken at least two wickets in all five of his ODIs including today.
Iyer looks settled enough now to go on the charge though. He hits Bartlett over the top for four off the last ball.
India 59-2 (17 overs) – Rohit 28, Iyer 20
Mitch Owen comes on for his first over. This is good from India, as Rohit and Iyer continue to rotate strike.
Three more added to the score.
India 56-2 (16 overs) – Rohit 26, Iyer 19
Bartlett returns, switching ends. Iyer again targets the off side, slicing the ball for four after some early pressure from Bartlett.
There is a decent amount of seam movement out there, but will it stick around for India’s bowlers? They will need at least 250 I reckon.
India 50-2 (15 overs) – Rohit 26, Iyer 13
Starc to continue. Can India up their momentum?
They keep the scoreboard ticking as they bring the 50 up. It has been a struggle but they are starting to build something here.
Four off the over.
India 46-2 (14 overs) – Rohit 25, Iyer 11
Still Hazlewood. Iyer drives in the gap at backwards point to get his first boundary.
Time for drinks.
India 41-2 (13 overs) – Rohit 25, Iyer 6
Australia’s bowlers have been excellent and are giving very little away. India are at least keeping the scoreboard ticking though.
Rohit pulls but can’t find the gap. Four singles from the over.
India 37-2 (12 overs) – Rohit 23, Iyer 4
Hazlewood appeals for lbw but cannot review. Would have been going over anyway.
Four off the over for India as they start to build a partnership here.
Not out
Looks to have missed the bat. There is a flat line on Snicko to confirm, and a small spike as the ball passes the thigh pad confirms why Australia appealed. Review lost and Australia have burned both reviews within 12 overs.
Australia review
Bit of a delay as Rohit gets a cut on his forearm patched up. Hazlewood continues for a sixth over.
Appeal for caught behind and given not out. Australia review.
India 33-2 (11 overs) – Rohit 20, Iyer 3
Starc returns. Iyer flashes a drive over point, but doesn’t fully connect and it will only be two.
First genuine short ball of the day and Iyer ducks. He then cloths the final ball to mid-off for a single.
India 29-2 (10 overs) – Rohit 19, Iyer 0
There we go! Rohit finally connects with a drive, and it sails over mid-off for four. An outside edge trickles down to third man to finally bring Iyer back on strike.
He cannot get off the mark and that will be the powerplay, which Australia have dominated.
India 24-2 (9 overs) – Rohit 14, Iyer 0
Rohit has faced 36 of the first 50 balls today as he weathers this early Australia storm. He tries the big drive again and misses again.
Bartlett is bowling beautifully today. India scamper through for a single off the last ball as Rohit keeps the strike.
India 22-2 (8 overs) – Rohit 13, Iyer 0
This is the first time Kohli has suffered back-to-back ducks in ODIs. Hazlewood keeps up the pressure at the other end.
Rohit tries to flick but gets a leading edge, but it flashes over backward point and will run down to the boundary. Streaky but needed.
India 17-2 (7 overs) – Rohit 8, Iyer 0
Shreyas Iyer plays his first ball to mid-off. Double wicket maiden for Bartlett and a fantastic bowling change from Marsh.
Wicket! Kohli lbw b Bartlett 0 – India 17-2
Two in the over, and Kohli is gone for a duck! He’s trapped in front as the ball nipped in and the finger goes up!
After a lengthy chat he does not review. That was plumb and India are in deep trouble already.
Wicket! Gill c Marsh b Bartlett 9 – India 17-1
Breakthrough! And it is such a cheap wicket for Gill to give away!
He comes forward to drive a half-volley from Bartlett but it is straight to Marsh at mid-off who dives forward and holds onto the catch! Australia have a deserved wicket.
India 17-0 (6 overs) – Rohit 8, Gill 9
There is absolutely no way Rohit hit that ball. Anyway, another good over from Hazlewood, who has Rohit on the ropes here.
Not out
It did look close, but there is a spike on UltraEdge. Australia lose an early review. It is strange as Rohit looked nowhere near the ball.
Australia review for lbw
Unsurprisingly, Hazlewood continues. Gill finally adds a blemish to his figures, driving into the gap, but Marsh chases it down to save a run.
Another big appeal, and this one looks closer. Given not out, but Australia review.
India 14-0 (5 overs) – Rohit 8, Gill 6
Umpire’s call on impact and wickets in the end. Early change for Australia as Xavier Bartlett comes on, and Rohit charges him second ball but misses completely.
Rohit is getting frustrated here, on six of 23 balls. He gets two to end the over though.
India 11-0 (4 overs) – Rohit 6, Gill 5
This is good from Hazlewood, who is really testing Rohit as another one nips inside and strikes him on the thigh pad.
Big appeal for lbw on the final ball, but it looks too high, and could have been outside the line. Back-to-back maidens for Hazlewood.
India 11-0 (3 overs) – Rohit 6, Gill 5
Decent amount and carry on this pitch so far, but that should die down after a few overs. Gill tries to cut through point but there is some excellent fielding from cover who hits the non-strikers end with a direct hit! This looks close.
Rohit just got back in time but that was outstanding fielding from Mitchell Owen at cover.
Gill makes amends next ball, driving through extra cover for the first boundary of the match.
And now Rohit gets in on the action, flicking for four as Starc goes too straight.
India 1-0 (2 overs) – Rohit 1, Gill 0
Hazlewood from the other end as expected. His second ball nips in, but Rohit leaves as it sails over the stumps.
Cautious start from Rohit as he sizes up Hazlewood on what looks like a good surface. Maiden over.
India 1-0 (1 over) – Rohit 1, Gill 0
Not much swing on offer initially for Starc, though it looks like he has started cross-seam. Starc is staying outside off, before finally bringing out the inswinger on the fifth ball, which Rohit plays for a single to square leg.
Solid opening over from Starc.
Match underway!
Here come the Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, followed by the Australian fielders as a sunny Adelaide Oval awaits. The ground is half-full already for this fixture.
Rohit will face first ball, while Starc will take the new ball from one end, having opted for a last-minute change of footwear.
Here comes the first ball! Play and miss for Rohit outside off.
Hazlewood especially looked in good form in the first ODI. Can he and his teammates keep their performances up as the Australian summer gathers pace?
And you can watch every ball of every Test in the Ashes live on TNT Sports and discovery+.Full teams
Australia: 1 Mitchell Marsh (c), 2 Travis Head, 3 Matthew Short, 4 Matthew Renshaw, 4 Alex Carey (wk), 6 Cooper Connolly, 7 Mitchell Owen, 8 Xavier Bartlett, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Adam Zampa, 11 Josh Hazlewood.
India: 1 Shubman Gill (c), 2 Rohit Sharma, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Shreyas Iyer, 5 Axar Patel, 6 KL Rahul (wk), 7 Washington Sundar, 8 Nitish Kumar Reddy, 9 Harshit Rana, 10 Arshdeep Singh, 11 Mohammed Siraj.
Australia win toss and will bowl first
News from the middle, and Australia have won the toss. Mitch Marsh elects to bowl and make three changes.
Alex Carey returns from injury to keep wicket and spinner Adam Zampa returns from paternity leave. Josh Philippe and Matthew Kuhnemann miss out. Xavier Bartlett replaces Nathan Ellis, who is rested.
India are unchanged from the first ODI, resisting the temptation to rotate their bowling attack despite some strong options. Shubman Gill says he would have bowled too.
What happened last time out?
Rain dominated much of the early stages of the first ODI in Perth, but we still had enough match action for a result.
The showers stifled India’s batting innings of any rhythm as they were put under pressure by Australia’s fearsome pace battery, and trudged their way to 136 for nine from 26 overs.
Australia chased the target down with nearly five overs to spare, as captain Mitchell Marsh shepherded his team with an unbeaten 46.
Weather watch: cool, but dry day in Adelaide
You will all be relieved to hear that the rain that troubled the first ODI has stayed well away today and been replaced by sunny skies, with the few clouds present set to clear up later this afternoon.
However, it is markedly cooler than you would expect, with highs of 20 degrees Celsius. How that will impact the toss is yet to be seen but Adelaide tends to be a batter’s paradise with its short square boundaries.
