Grammy-winning artist Justin Bieber has set social media abuzz after two clips that to show him vibing to Nigerian singer Fireboy DML’s hit track “Playboy.”
The pop star, known for chart-toppers like “Peaches” and his remix of Wizkid and Tems’ “Essence,” posted the first video on X and Instagram on Saturday.
The clip, reportedly from The League basketball game held in Los Angeles on October 23, showed Bieber with his team, SKYLRK, against Nahmias.
The video featured Fireboy’s 2022 Afrobeats anthem “Playboy” as background music while Bieber confidently drained shots on the court.
A second video, shared by another user identified as #AsakyGRN, allegedly showed Bieber mouthing the lyrics to the same song, audibly singing along to the line, “Shawty wanna play with a big boy like me.”
The videos quickly went viral, drawing over 90,000 likes and sparking debates among fans. While some praised Bieber for promoting African music, others questioned whether the track was played live or added during editing.
One user, #jbanj, wrote, “Shout out to Fireboy for the background music — ‘Playboy’ never misses.”
The clip also appeared to connect to one of Bieber’s recent livestreams, uploaded on Saturday, where he discussed faith, hate, and personal growth. Although the viral Fireboy moment was not part of the stream’s official episode.
On Instagram, fans echoed the excitement. User #stevoskys commented: “This is proof #fireboydml is recognised and respected outside Nigeria.”
Fireboy DML, signed to YBNL Nation and Empire, released “Playboy” as part of his third studio album of the same name in August 2022. The song remains one of the defining Afrobeats tracks of the decade and continues to find international recognition.
