Zaiya is all of us if we suddenly woke up with a trunk in the middle of our faces. The baby elephant is so curious about hers! Video taken at the Blackpool Zoo in Lancashire, England shows the baby elephant messing around with her appendage. She’s probably trying to figure out how it works. Isn’t that so cute?
It’s like a little game to the baby elephant. She taps on her trunk and tries to understand what it does. Is it for smelling? Grabbing things? It’s all of the above!
Trunks are very distinctive features of elephants — aside from their size, of course. But the video really proves that even they are fascinated by these totally unique parts of their bodies. One would think that trunks are instinctual for elephants. That they are born knowing how to use them and what they are for. But that’s not the case.
Zaiya was really having a ball touching her trunk. She would tap the end or use her foot to sway her trunk back and forth. So cute! Wait until she realizes that her trunk can grab things. Then she’ll really be amazed.
The comments section was practically melting from all this cuteness.
“No, because imagine being born and there’s literally like an arm on your face,” wrote one person, who could understand Zaiya’s fascination.
“This is kinda like human babies playing with their feet,” chimed in someone else.
“Baby elephants figuring out what to do with their trunks is low key my favorite subgenre of content,” agreed another commenter.
“And they suck on their trunks for comfort,” pointed out someone else.
What Do Elephant Trunks Do?
An elephant without its trunk just doesn’t make any sense. But what do these distinctive body parts do? A trunk is essentially an extended nose! Yep, trunks are how elephants smell.
But what makes trunks really interesting are the prehensile “fingers” at the tip of the nose. They curl up around objects, allowing elephants to lift or move objects. Trunks have no bones in them, but they do have almost 40,000 muscles. Making them some seriously strong schnozzes!
