Roman Kemp has revealed that some celebrities showed their true colours at a star-studded Halloween bash he once attended courtesy of Jonathan Ross, and he wasn’t impressed by what he saw.

Speaking on the Halloween episode of his You About? podcast with singer Tom Grennan, The One Show presenter, 32, opened up about the extravagant Halloween party, which he decided to go to in costume as the terrifying Miss Trunchbull from Matilda.

Roman explained that the disguise gave him an unexpected glimpse into how certain stars really behave when they think they’re interacting with someone of a lesser social standing than them.

He said: “Did you see me as Miss Trunchbull? Look at that. He had it in Koko in Camden. We went to Jonathan Ross’s party.

“Do you know what I realised? If I’m me and I’ve met these people and they come onto The One Show and they’re really nice because they can see it’s you — you see who the real person is when you’re at a Halloween party.”

He went on to reveal that some well-known figures didn’t treat him with the same warmth when they didn’t recognise him beneath his fake teeth and unibrow.

“There were a lot of celebrities that did not know it was me dressed as Miss Trunchbull and my interaction with them was far different to the one that I normally had,” Roman said.

When Tom asked if that meant the other celebs were rude and didn’t care who he was, to Roman admitted bluntly: “Yeah. And it took me saying…” Tom then interjected: “‘It’s Roman’, and then they thought ‘Oh no’.” To which Roman replied: “Yeah.”

Despite having some frosty encounters, Roman said there were still some lovely people in attendance. He shared: “The nicest person who I chatted with that night was Simon Pegg. Simon Pegg’s there, he’s with his kids and stuff like that, he’s dressed up.”

Roman added that the annual bash is filled with A-listers, who he called “that upper echelon of celeb”. The presenter, who has hosted The One Show since 2022, is no stranger to rubbing shoulders with famous people.

Roman has been keeping busy since leaving Capital FM’s Breakfast Show in 2024.

As well as his BBC presenting duties, he’s become a familiar face on shows such as I’m A Celebrity — where he finished third in 2019 — and Celebrity Gogglebox, which he appears on with his famous parents, Spandau Ballet’s Martin Kemp and former Wham! singer Shirlie Holliman.

In a previous episode of his podcast Roman revealed that he has been approached several times to take part in Strictly Come Dancing, but said he’s turned it down due to anxiety about public criticism.

He admitted: “I get asked each year, [but] it’s not really for me. Do you know what it is? I don’t think I could set myself up for the criticism. I’m very sensitive and I think it would terrify me.”

He added that while Strictly is “magical” to watch, he is happy cheering the dancers on from the sidelines.
