Liverpool have given 18-year-old youngster Kieran Morrison his debut tonight in their Carabao Cup clash against Crystal Palace with a number of senior stars missing from the matchday squad. The attacking midfielder was also part of the Liverpool squad that travelled to Brentford, for their recent defeat in the Premier League, but was an unused substitute for that game.

Hugo Ekitike, Alexander Isak, Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo were just some of the big-name stars to miss the clash with the Eagles, as Arne Slot rested several first-team players. Just a few days on from being called up to the Premier League squad for the first time, the young winger was handed an opportunity to impress from the off.

Morrison has been impressive for Liverpool U21s this season, flourishing after being returned to his natural right-sided position under Rob Page. He played a crucial role in the U19s’ 5-4 UEFA Youth League win against Frankfurt midweek, contributing to all five goals.

Officially, the Northern Ireland youngster recorded two assists, but his influence extended well beyond the stats, contributing to chance creation and forcing mistakes from Frankfurt’s defenders.

Although he’s primarily a right forward, Morrison featured in a forward partnership with American striker Keyrol Figueroa, and his freedom across the front line caused significant problems for the opposition.

He now boasts one goal and three assists in eight appearances for Liverpool this term and, with his confidence on the rise, he’s been rewarded with a chance in the senior team. He was part of the first-team squad alongside fellow youngsters Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha, before being named on the bench at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Having transferred to Liverpool from Manchester United during his teenage years, Morrison has long been seen as one of the club’s most promising young talents.

He has previously made the bench twice under Slot, during the Carabao Cup triumph over Southampton – but this is his first start for Liverpool.

It is anticipated that the 18-year-old will sign a new contract when his current one runs out next summer.

His stand-out performances earned him a call-up to the Northern Ireland U21 squad, during the last international break. It marked the first time Morrison old has been called up to an international squad since last year’s Under-19 Euros, held in Northern Ireland.
