Tottenham exited the Carabao Cup with a whimper on Wednesday night as they were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle at St James’ Park. Thomas Frank made the trip to the north-east without 11 first-team players but still named a fairly strong squad for the match. The visitors were off the boil from the first whistle, though, as Newcastle made a fast start. Just when it seemed Spurs had weathered the early storm, they suddenly found themselves behind. With Djed Spence out of position as he tied his shoelaces, Fabian Schar headed home from Sandro Tonali’s corner to open the scoring.
