April Windsor’s (Amelia Flanagan) life has become utterly hellish since she found herself trapped within Celia Daniels’ (Jaye Griffiths) crime ring in Emmerdale and, as Celia makes perfectly clear in tonight’s episode: there’s no way out.

When Dylan Penders (Fred Kettle) returned to the village and reunited with April, it seemed a beautiful young love story was due to begin, but that was scuppered almost immediately when it became apparent that Dylan was in the grip of drug dealer, Ray Walters (Joe Absolom).

Though Dylan longed for a crime-free life, Ray had established himself as a father figure and always managed to keep his claws buried deep within the vulnerable teen, while also displaying a keen interest in April.

When she took on a drug drop initially to protect Dylan from Ray’s wrath, the third resulted in a fake mugging, thus creating a ‘debt’ for her that she owed to the Ray’s shadowy boss.

With April now dealing full time, she was horrified when she dropped an ecstasy tablet at home, which resulted in her younger brother, Leo Goskirk (Harvey Rogerson), swallowing it and being rushed to hospital. As April prepared to tell the police all, utterly wracked with guilt, Celia finally revealed herself as the true mastermind behind the entire operation.

Celia made it clear to her second-in-command and adopted son, Ray, that they were to push April further and soon, she was sent on her first job that involved more than dropping off drugs.

Arriving at a hotel with a client, April was chilled when it became clear that said client expected sex in addition to his package of cocaine and she fled. Though Celia didn’t react violently, she made it abundantly clear that her reputation would be impacted should April not ‘perform’, and that clients who’d be paying for sex would be a brilliant way to reduce her ‘debt’.

April and Dylan, desperate to escape the horrors their lives have become, stole money from Ray and planned to run, though were forced to return when he threatened Leo. Splitting them up, Ray took Dylan away, threatening to harm him should April mess up with her next ‘client’.

With Celia’s words of reducing her debt ringing in her ears, April met the client, who was initially kind, before his attitude became disconcerting and he forced himself on the troubled team. Terrified, April hit him with a vodka bottle, killing him.

With nowhere else to turn, she called Celia and Ray, who immediately embarked on a clean up operation. As Ray ordered the removal of the clients body, Celia took April’s clothes to burn while making it clear that her help came at a price.

When April later threatened to tell all to the police, desperate to escape the shady world she’s found herself in, Ray called on Celia to deal with her. Icy and terrifying, Celia openly threatened those who April loves most, her dad,Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock), grandad, Bob Hope (Tony Audenshaw) and Dylan.

Putting it plainly, she made it clear that she ‘owns’ April, her debt has doubled (and then some) and there’s absolutely no escaping her current circumstances before leaving her alone and sobbing.

Is there any way out for April? It doesn’t seem so…
