Outlander star Caitriona Balfe has landed her next movie role in A Long Winter, the latest film from All of Us Strangers director Andrew Haigh, which has rounded up a few big names for its cast.
Along Balfe, the film stars The Bear and Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Heartstopper’s Kit Connor, Gladiator II’s Fred Hechinger, Reservation Dogs’ D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Jurassic World: Rebirth’s Manuel Garcia Rulfo, and The Gilded Age’s David Furr.
Production is currently underway, with US streaming company Mubi and the UK’s Film4 collaborating to bring it to life.

The story was first released as part of a collection called Mothers & Sons way back in 2006, but was recently reprinted on its own in September, tying in nicely with the film.
In a review of the collection from back in the day, The Stinging Fly wrote: “This collection shows Tóibín to be a master storyteller. He is especially adept at startling narrative turns that combine insight with unsettling ambiguity… the final passages of A Long Winter are also tremendously powerful.”
“The most striking example of Tóibín’s emotional control . . . [An] eloquent expression of the bond between a mother and a son,” wrote The Guardian, while Kirkus Reviews called it “a beautiful tale of filial grief, sexual hunger and hard-won acceptance of mutability and loss”.

Meanwhile, Balfe’s film The Cut was recently released in the UK, while she filmed a new adaptation of Sense and Sensibility in the summer.
And then there’s Outlander itself. After a spread-out seventh season and prequel show Blood of My Blood, the 10-episode season 8 will wrap the show up in early 2026.
A Long Winter is currently filming, it does not currently have a release date.
