Two people have died after a single vehicle collision in County Durham. Officers from Durham Constabulary were alerted to the collision on the A167 at Ferryhill at around 1.40am today.

A Ford Ka is believed to have come off the road and come to a rest at a BP petrol station forecourt on the opposite side of the carriageway. A man and a woman were provided with medical assistance, but both were tragically pronounced dead at the scene.

Their families have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers. The car is believed to have been travelling northbound at the time of collision, from Chilton towards Thinford.

Emergency services, including Durham Constabulary, the North East Ambulance Service and the Great North Air Ambulance, attended the incident, at the junction with Dean Road, at around 1.30am. The road was later reopened at around 10.45am, but the BP garage itself was cordoned-off and officers remained at the scene.

Officers have appealed for information from anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who has dashcam footage of the vehicle prior to the collision. Anyone who can help is asked to call Durham Constabulary on 101 or email sciu@durham.police.uk quoting incident number 39 of November 1.
