Sky has just dropped the first full official trailer for Matt Smith’s “wild” drama, The Death of Bunny Munro, set to debut on Thursday 20 November.

Described by Sky as “both a wild cautionary tale and a tender portrait of the relationship between father and son”, the six-part series, stars Smith in the titular role of Bunny, a grieving sex-addict who is struggling to come to terms with the death of his wife whilst raising their son.

Based on Nick Cave’s acclaimed novel of the same name, the synopsis for the series reads: “Following his wife Libby’s death by suicide, sex addicted door-to-door beauty salesman and self-professed lothario Bunny Munro (Matt Smith), finds himself saddled with his young son, Bunny Junior (Rafael Mathé), and only a loose concept of parenting.

“As the two struggle to contain their grief in wildly different ways, Bunny takes Junior on the road for an increasingly out-of-control door-to-door sales tour around Brighton and the surrounding coast.”

It continues: “Bunny bounces from one sales pitch to the next, trying to seduce any woman he meets, while Junior kills time talking to the ghost of his mother and grappling with the dawning realisation that his dad isn’t just fallible, he’s a mess.

“As Bunny starts to unravel, he realises he must do something to rescue his son from his own outdated notions of what it is to be a man; to save him from becoming another Bunny Munro.”

Mathé makes his television debut in the Sky series which also features Bad Sisters’ Sarah Greene as Libby, Without Sin’s Johann Myers as Poodle, Boiling Point’s Alice Feetham as Yvonne, Shameless’ David Threlfall as Bunny Snr, and Frauds’ Elizabeth Berrington as Charlotte Parnovar.

The creative team behind the adaptation includes writer  Pete Jackson (Somewhere Boy) and director Isabella Eklöf (Industry). The series was produced by Clerkenwell Films (Baby Reindeer) in association with Sky Studios.

Alongside this ‘tender’ story, Smith, is said to have brought a ‘tenderness,’ another role he played earlier this year in the film, Caught Stealing.

Speaking of his performance in the Austin Butler-lead crime thriller, Director Darren Aronofsky told Radio Times the role of Russ was a “very hard” one for Smith to play, stating: “[Russ] is a little bit simple in his own way and that’s a hard thing to do. And there is a tenderness, even though he is a punk!”

Smith gave further insight into his approach to the character when he told Radio Times: “We catch [Russ] in a nexus of anxiety and stress. And a good note Darren gave me really early on was… actually, this guy… [he] used the word ‘sweet’, I think. Like…there’s a kind of sensitivity to him in a way. That’s why he acts up.”

The Death of Bunny Munro premieres of Sky and NOW Thursday 20 November.
