Coronation Street fans have pointed out an ‘inconsistency’ with the writing in recent weeks involving Maria Connor.

The hairdresser, who has been played by Samia Longchambon since 2000, was recently part of a comedic scene in which her alter-ego seemingly had no knowledge of the classic film The Karate Kid – although this was not always the case.

In an episode that aired in May 2024, Maria was shocked to realise that she and her son Liam had never watched the 1980s classic together, and demanded that he go and put it straight on because she was an ‘expert’ in the moves that were taught in the famous film.

She said: “Wow, great coordination! I was an expert in Karate Kid moves back in the day, crane kicks, wax on, wax off.” When Liam asked her what she was talking about, an astonished Maria replied: “Have we never watched The Karate Kid together? We need to fix that, go and load it up!”

But last week, Maria now appeared to have had no knowledge of it whatsoever. She said to Gary: “All right, Mr Magic, let’s hear it.” Instantly confused, Gary said: “Who’s Mr Magic? Derren Brown?” to which Maria replied: “Him that you’re always banging on about.

“That kung-fu film you always watch, you and Dev talk about it.” Incredulous, Gary responded: “Babe, that’s The Karate Kid. Mr Magic? It’s Mr. Miyagi! Don’t ever go to a Karate Kid convention, will you?”

Making her position on the whole thing quite clear, Maria replied: “Don’t worry, I won’t!” Superfans of the world’s longest-running TV soap took to social media site Reddit to point out the glaring inaccuracy. In initial post, who attached the two clips to the top of the thread, wrote: “Not a big deal, just a writing inconsistency for her character. Both clips are shown above.”

Fellow users were amused by the goof, with one writing: “This is why I’m on this sub. Excellent work!” whilst another said: “hahaha BUSTED! Superb!”

One fan, trying to justify the error, said: “Whenever my mum talks about films that she loved when she was younger, she never remembers what the characters are called or anything, so I imagine this is quite realistic And like someone else said, she probably only said that she liked the movies back in the day to make Liam feel better.”

The scene in question all took place when Maria was reeling after she discovered that her rival Eva Price (Catherine Tyldesley) had moved back onto the Street to run the Rovers Return, and was stewing on the news.

During her last stint, Eva, who first appeared in 2011, made a rival out of Maria Connon when the hairdresser had an affair with her fiancé Aidan Connor. Instead of confronting Aidan head-on about his infidelity, she decided to take revenge by faking a pregnancy.

Maria discovered Eva’s lies and exposed them all at the wedding, which resulted in them having a Dynasty-style catfight in a fountain. Eva later discovered that she was in fact pregnant with Aidan’s baby and had planned to give baby Susie away to her stepsister Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor).

However, Aidan (Shayne Ward) later took his own life and Eva (Catherine Tyldesley) began to grow close to her daughter, eventually opting to leave in the back of a taxi with her for good.

Coronation Street is on ITV and STV at 8pm Monday, Wednesday, Friday and ITVX and STV Player at 7am
