An indie band have alleged they were kicked out of a Manchester venue after throwing a guitar off stage and clapping back at the audience.

On Saturday night (November 1), Manchester Calling event took place at The Bread Shed, on Grosvenor Street near Oxford Road. The show featured a range of local bands including The Falls, Pentire, The Sukis and Jamie Higgs.

Also forming part of the line-up for the city centre day festival was Leeds-based group Garage Flower, who have cited the likes of The Charlatans and The Stone Roses as some of their inspirations, with the band’s name coming from the lyrics to Stone Roses’ Tell Me.

In a video posted on Garage Flower’s Instagram page, the band were seen interacting with the crowd at Saturday night’s event, which is run by Roadhouse Presentations.

“What we saying Manchester?,” the lead singer asked the crowd to a muted reaction. “That were ****ing ******, what are we saying? Got told this was sold out, bro. ****ing noone in here.”

In the video, the band then claimed that someone had ‘****ed about with our sound’ and had ‘already turned the lead guitar off once’. In apparent frustration, the singer then throws a guitar off the stage before walking off.

“Travelled down from Leeds to be messed about like that,” the band said in the video. “See, Bread Shed, yeah. Absolute ******* bro. **** em bro, **** this festival.”

The video then appears to show an interaction with an individual, who responds to an alleged comment from the band. The man is heard saying: “He just said we’re a bunch of *****, i’ll slap his ****ing face off the little ****.”

The man is then heard adding: “I do this for a living. I’m not some ****ing twenty-year-old snot nosed kid. I’ll make sure you won’t get booked. You won’t get any more bookings in this city.”

The M.E.N reached out to representatives for the band, and was told they would not be commenting on the video. A spokesperson for The Bread Shed said the video had been ‘hugely edited’. The venue claimed the band had initially refused to leave, and ‘screamed’ at staff.

Garage Flower’s video, which has been shared with their 10,800 followers on Instagram, has generated a mixed response from fans – with some hailing their reaction, whilst others suggested they needed ‘humbling’. It has also received more than 300,000 views on TikTok.

Jason Jennings, the owner of The Bread Shed and the Flour and Flagon pub, told the M.E.N: “The video has been hugely edited to show a specific viewpoint, which does not show the band screaming at staff to the point they walked out upset and were asked to leave by the manager to which they refused and continued to scream expletives.

“It also doesn’t show the lead singer arguing with the promoter before their set, nor the fact that he threw his guitar twice on stage, the first time causing his sound issues, and the second – in the video – smashing his guitar on the stage barrier, where audience members were stood.

“Apart from that, Manchester Calling was a fabulous crowd with great promoters. A crowd who spoke with their feet when Garage Flower came on and left to the other venue, so they played to an empty room.”

Jason added the venue will not be making any further statements regarding the incident.
