India National Cricket Team T20I vice-captain Shubman Gill has been lauded by his teammate Shivam Dube and Australia National Cricket Team pacer Nathan Ellis for his slow knock.

Shubman Gill played an innings which you don’t associate with today’s T20 cricket – Nathan Ellis

Since returning to the T20I setup, Shubman Gill has not been able to fire with the bat. He has been given a permanent spot at the top order, but he is yet to play an impactful knock that justifies his selection over the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sanju Samson.

In the fourth T20I against the Aussies, Gill played a cautious knock and tried to extend his stay in the middle before being castled by Nathan Ellis in the 15th over.

He scored 46 runs off 39 balls, with 4 fours and 1 six, and batted with a strike rate of 117.94. Shubman Gill received heavy criticism for his sluggish knock, but India skipper Suryakumar Yadav lauded him, stating that he played as per the conditions.

Now, Gill has received praise from the opposition team as well as Nathan Ellis, who stated that the knock of the Indian vice-captain can’t he associated with modern-day T20 cricket, but it was really important. He said:

“Shubman Gill played an innings which you don’t associate with today’s T20 cricket but that was important for them to take the game deep which to their credit they did.”

All-rounder Shivam Dube further praised Gill for not being tempted to hit boundaries and focusing on taking singles and doubles. He said:

“The partnership with Shubman was important. They were tempting us to hit on the longer boundaries,” the India all-rounder stated.

“We decided to stitch a partnership, take singles and twos and whatever deliveries are there to be hit, we would target them. It was crucial for us to stay there.”

Dube further stated that India were confident of defending the score after posting 167/8 on the board because they planned things very well.

“167 on this ground is definitely a good score because the quality bowling we have, the spinners, the fast bowlers…I trust them and the whole team trusts our bowlers,” Dube said.

“Definitely, it is a T20 game and any of the batters can come and smack, but on this ground where the side boundaries are big, we had planned it very nicely and we had confidence that we could stop them,” Dube added.

Notably, India registered a comfortable 48-run win in the match and would head to Brisbane for the series finale, where they would be looking to clinch yet another series victory under Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav.
