There might be some kind of new Crash Team Racing title in the works at Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled developer Beenox.
We emphasise the word might because this all stems from a pretty weird leak. Bear with us for this one…
So, earlier this week, Beenox apparently updated the banner art on its official X (also known as Twitter) profile. The image featured art taken from games across the studio’s catalogue, except one specific piece of art caught the eyes of eager Crash Bandicoot fans.
Said art is of the titular bandicoot driving a kart — but as far as people can tell, it’s an entirely new render. It’s not concept art taken from the aforementioned Nitro-Fueled, and Crash himself is seemingly sporting his Crash Bandicoot 4 design. The platformer released after Nitro-Fueled, in 2021.
Adding fuel to the fire, Beenox actually took this banner down, replacing it with a standard Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 promotion (Beenox being one of the shooter series’ multiple development teams).
It’s possible that the art simply wasn’t supposed to be shown yet, but thankfully, it was spotted and saved for reference by @LuchoComix.
This discovery has, unsurprisingly, whipped Crash fanatics into a frenzy. Nitro-Fueled launched what now feels like a lifetime ago, back in 2019 for PS4 — and it remains locked to the last-gen console, running at a disappointing 30 frames-per-second.
The racing remake ended up selling a whopping 10 million copies, so it’d make sense for Activision to eventually follow up on that success.
There is a chance, we suppose, that this new kart-based art was made specifically for Beenox’s promotional materials, but that does feel like a bit of a stretch.
With The Game Awards coming up next month, it’ll be interesting to see if anything comes of this ‘leak’. In the meantime, feel free to express your love for Crash Team Racing in the comments section below.
