Having once been among the least popular members of the Manchester United squad, Harry Maguire deserves every bit of the positive reception he now gets at Old Trafford.
Erik ten Hag tried hard to sell Maguire; however, his love for the club and never-say-die attitude saw the England international survive his United captaincy being stripped, booed on tour, and very limited game time, before he bounced back with his performances.

Maguire had renewed confidence under Ruben Amorim, and this resulted in a one-year contract extension being triggered. Additionally, Maguire claimed a spot in United’s leadership group, and now Amorim has discussed what exactly he likes so much about the number five.

United snubbed transfer approaches for Maguire in 2025 to show how valued he was, and despite being 32 years old, there is even consideration of a new contract.
Now, speaking to the Men in Blazers podcast, Amorim has explained why he likes Maguire so much, both in terms of his on and off-pitch qualities.
I would like to start with the quality as a player. He’s a very, very good player that, like any other player, needs confidence, and we are trying to give them to give him that to play better.
“Then he’s really good on the ball. If people remind [remember] of the start of Harry Maguire in Leicester, he’s really, really good on the ball. Then, as you can see, our league in this moment is a lot about set pieces.
“The first goal, a lot of times, is set pieces. He’s so strong defending set pieces and is really strong attacking set pieces. So everything together gives us a player with a lot of experience to play the game.”
Continuing, Amorim explained that he is a fan of Maguire’s personality and strength off the pitch, with experiences that can only aid his teammates.
“Then you have the other part, when any person lives life one moment, that you need to grow up and to be really strong, you can you can help the other guys to understand that things will change, and you will survive, you will not die, you can overcome any situation.
“So that is massive, especially for the moment of our club. So again, I just try to use the best footballer that Harry Maguire is.
“Also, with that to bring the mentality that he showed us during these years to overcome very difficult situations.”

Few players are capable of outlasting the criticisms that Maguire has at United, which is absolutely a testament to his character and something that proves the kind of role model he is. Only David Beckham has gone through what Maguire has and come out the other side a club icon.
However, should this correlate into a new contract? We would suggest it should, assuming he is willing to take a huge wage cut to reflect his squad player playing time.

United are looking likely to lose both Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro, which takes a lot of leadership out of the team, so keeping Maguire should be considered vital for the dressing room.
Maguire might not play a lot next season, but having his presence would be massive, as he can eventually take up the Tom Heaton and Jonny Evans role as he continues to age.
