Having had locals and visitors queuing up in their droves for years and years, a North East chippy that’s described as having a ‘frozen in time’ charm has been championed for doing the best fish and chips in the country. And it’s home is in a very famous location that is widely regarded as being the one of the UK’s top tourist attractions.
Now, we know that readers of ChronicleLive are pretty passionate when it comes to fish and chips. Earlier this year, right in time for Good Friday, we asked you to nominate the best places in the North East for fish and chips. Among the contenders were South Shields favourite Colmans, Bells of Durham and Harbour View, the Seaton Sluice chippy that always has massive lines of people outside every Easter, but, in the final vote, it was V.Gormans of Ashington, that came out on top.
One thing that shocked us was that Davey’s at Beamish didn’t make the top 10, despite being regularly talked up as one of, if not the best, place to go in the region for fish and chips. And now, it’s come back into the spotlight after content creator and avid foodie, Callum (@streetfoodanalysis), took to TikTok to share a video of the County Durham chippy, labelling it the “best” in the country.

As reported by The Mirror, Callum told his many followers: “This is the fish and chip shop trapped in time. One of the last in the world that uses coal to heat the original 1950s fryers with fish and chips cooked in beef dripping.”
The even better news for fans of fish and chips who visit Beamish is that there is now a new chippy on the block, with Middleton’s proving just as popular as Davey’s and some customers declaring it ‘might even better’ than Davey’s, since it opened in the 1950s town in 2022.
