The second annual 745 Game took place on Sunday with the rugby league team, named after Rob Burrow, won once again, however, it wasn’t about the winning or losing with over £100,000 raised to help fight Motor Neurone Disease.
The cross-code game was the brainchild of rugby league legend Rob Burrow and rugby union player Ed Slater, both of whom had been diagnosed with MND.
Burrow sadly lost his fight against the disease in June 2024 meaning he didn’t witness the first 745 Game, which took place in the off-season last year.
The matches name is derived from the numbers that each man wore, seven for Rob Burrow, four for Ed Slater, and five for the late great Doddie Weir who helped inspire both men so much in how he took on his own fight against MND.
Weir was influential in encouraging Kevin Sinfield to take on his incredible 7 in 7 challenges which have helped raise millions to fight against MND, culminating in the building of the Rob Burrow Centre which opened earlier this year.
Rugby League greats feature in 745 Game
The 745 Game is another of those fundraising methods with a hybrid game between a rugby league side and a rugby union side, both packed full of legends.
After winning the first match last year, the rugby league team won once again with this year’s match being played at Kingsholm Stadium, the home of Gloucester, Slater’s former team.
Despite racing into a 26-0 lead and at one point leading 45-19, a second half comeback from the rugby union team worried the rugby league side, however, they hung on to win 45-43 in front of 9,117 fans.
More importantly, it was confirmed mid-game that over £100,000 had been raised with that announcement being made just after the seven minutes and 45 seconds mark, honouring those who inspired the game.
Leroy Cudjoe, Waine Pryce, Ryan Atkins and Josh Griffin were among those to score for the rugby league side with others such as Adrian Morley, Keith Senior and Danny Houghton starring.
