Video footage from Monday’s ceremony at Dublin Castle shows President Catherine Connolly welcoming guests, including the Taoiseach, Chief Justice and church leaders, before appearing to refer to Ms O’Neill as “Michelle Smith”.

In the clip, the President can be heard saying: “…agus an Chéad Aire an Tuaiscirt, Michelle Smith,” before continuing with her address.

However, the official transcript of the speech, later released by Áras an Uachtaráin, lists the correct name – “Michelle O’Neill.”

Ms O’Neill, who attended the event alongside other political and civic leaders from across Ireland, was among those to publicly support Ms Connolly’s successful presidential campaign earlier this year.

Sinn Féin had backed the independent candidate for the role, describing her as a candidate who would “represent all communities on the island”.

The inauguration marked the beginning of Ms Connolly’s term as Ireland’s tenth president, succeeding Michael D Higgins. She is also the third female to hold the position.

In a social post, in which she shared a photograph of herself alongside President Connolly, the First Minister said: “It was a great privilege to represent you all as First Minister at the inauguration of our new President, Catherine Connolly.

“Today marks a day of great hope for our nation as Catherine begins her term as Uachtarán na hÉireann.

“She is a leader of compassion and courage who will represent everyone who calls this island home, with integrity and sincerity.

“I look forward to working alongside Catherine in this time of change and massive potential on our island, as we continue our journey towards a fairer, stronger, and united Ireland.

“Guím gach rath ar Catherine san am atá romhainn.”
